Amazon Orders 5 New Series, Renews ‘Mozart in the Jungle’
Amazon Studios has greenlit five new original series, and renewed “Mozart in the Jungle” for a second season.
New shows coming soon to Amazon Prime Instant Video include “The Man in the High Castle,” which is based on Philip K. Dick’s alternative history novel of the same name; hour-long dark comedy “Mad Dogs”; Amazon’s first docu-series “The New Yorker Presents”; and kids series “Just Add Magic” and “The Stinky & Dirty Show.”
The new series come from a roster of filmmakers that include Frank Spotnitz (“The X-Files”), Ridley Scott (“Blade Runner”), Cris Cole (“The Good Times Are Killing Me”), Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”), and Alex Gibney (“The Armstrong Lie”).
“During the latest pilot season, Amazon customers made ‘The Man in the High Castle’ our most watched pilot ever,” said Roy Price, VP of Amazon Studios, in a statement. “These new series, including our first docu-series, are some of our most ambitious to date and I’m looking forward to their premieres in the future.”
The shows will join a lineup of originals that include the the Golden Globe-winning comedy “Transparent,” the political comedy “Alpha House”; the cop drama “Bosch,” which just premiered its first season; and kids series like “Wishenpoof!”
To date, Amazon has ordered 13 series from its pilot development program.
One previously ordered show, “Mozart in the Jungle,” will also get a second season, which will premiere early next year.
Based on Blair Tindall’s memoir “Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs & Classical Music,” the series takes viewers inside the New York Symphony. The series stars Gael Garcia Bernal (“Rosewater”), Saffron Burrows (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Lola Kirke (“Gone Girl”), and Malcolm McDowell (“The Mentalist”). It’s executive produced by Roman Coppola (“Moonrise Kingdom”), Jason Schwartzman (“The Darjeeling Limited”), and Paul Weitz (“About a Boy”).
