Big Frame Debuts Viewfinder to Help Creators Help Each Other

/ Aug 9, 2013

Big Frame has launched Viewfinder, a new platform for the MCN’s creators to help promote each other’s videos, and in return, earn some rewards.

Creators who sign into Viewfinder will have the ability to watch new and feature videos from the Big Frame network. By showing some “love” (in the form of likes, comments, etc.), the creators will accumulate points, which they can then redeem for “real-life” prizes. A couple of these prizes go directly toward helping the creators’ YouTube presence, such as paid ad campaigns and promotion for “special videos.” The third potential prize is even more direct: cash. Those are the three rewards available to creators at the moment, though Big Frame plans to add and refine based on what works and doesn’t.

“If you’re a YouTube creator, you know that a like, comment, annotation, or embed from the right influencer — whether it’s a friend, collaborator or publisher — can have a huge impact on your views and subscribers,” says Jen Robinson, head of product at Big Frame, in a blog post announcing the launch of Viewfinder. “It’s like the Reddit effect.”

Robinson says Viewfinder is designed to “facilitate those interactions by incentivizing established talent to support emerging channels, and emerging channels to support the community. We think of it as a virtuous cycle.”

This isn’t Big Frame’s first attempt at trying to help its creators help each other out. The network’s owned-and-operated off-YouTube “channels” — Forefront, Polished, and Wonderly — are designed to create communities around specific verticals and creators.

“We have always been a place for creators to come together to collaboration and create community,” says Sarah Penna, co-founder and chief creative officer at Big Frame. “This is just the next step in making that vision come to life”

Penna tells VideoInk that the idea for Viewfinder goes as far back as two years — when the company was founded. Though she adds that engineers have “actively” been working on it for the past six months.

Wonder what google thinks about this…isn’t it against their terms of service to get other people to like, comment, etc directly? Its sort of a loss for advertisers…

We’re driving more traffic to Google/YouTube [the videos are all embedded from YouTube directly] so it’s a win for advertisers who want their content/ads to be seen by more people and a win for YouTube.
