EXCLUSIVE: FremantleMedia Nabs Global Distribution Rights to AOL’s First Long-Form Series

/ Jan 20, 2015

FremantleMedia International has secured global distribution rights to AOL’s first long-form original series, “Connected.”

Set to debut on the AOL On Network in the US in March, “Connected” will chronicle the lives of six real, seemingly disconnected New Yorkers, while also exploring the concept of what it means to be a family in the Big Apple. Per AOL’s description: “As the six parallel stories unfold and eventually come together in a cohesive storyline, viewers are reminded of the universal bond that family has on individuals and on society as a whole — regardless of social status, income, gender, marital status, or sexual orientation.”

It’s based on an Israeli docu-series of the same name, which is one of Israel’s highest-rated cable series ever and has also been sold to 11 other markets including France, Ireland, India, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Ukraine, Estonia, Romania, and the Netherlands.

Per the new deal, FMI will be responsible for distributing AOL’s version of “Connected,” which will encompass 20, 30-minute episodes, outside of the US. The sole exception is Canada, where AOL Canada will retain an exclusive premiere window.

“FremantleMedia International continues to be a leader in global content distribution, with an expertise in taking first run digital content to the linear world,” said Hayley Dickson, VP of acquisitions and development at FMI, in a statement. “When it comes to quality programming, the medium is irrelevant as we see best in class storytelling coming from a variety of sources.”

“Connected” is produced for AOL by Israeli production company Koda Communications, in association with Morgan Spurlock’s Warrior Poets. The series was first announced ahead of AOL’s Digital Content Newfront in 2014.
