‘House of Cards’ Scores Nine Emmy Nominations

It’s a good day to be Netflix. The nominees for the 65th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning and the streaming service (or should we refer to it as a programmer now?) has a presence in four major categories.

“House of Cards” received nine nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama, and one each in the lead actor and actress drama categories for stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright.

David Fincher received a nomination for his directing work on the first episode, while the series also garnered recognition from The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for its original score, main title theme music, and cinematography (Eigil Bryld, for his work on the first episode).

The political thriller was Netflix’s first major foray into original programming. Adapted from a British mini-series of the same name by film/TV/digital studio Media Rights Capital, Trigger Street Productions, and creator Beau Willimon, the 13-episode first season chronicled the rise of a Machiavellian US congressman who had a penchant for breaking the fourth wall. “House of Cards” is scheduled to return for a second 13-episode season next year.

The other major Netflix-related nomination went to Jason Bateman, in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category for his work on “Arrested Development,” which Netflix resurrected for a fourth season (and might bring back for another). The comedy series received three nominations in total.

“Hemlock Grove,” the horror/thriller from Eli Roth, while almost universally panned by critics, also received a couple of nominations.

“We are overwhelmed with 14 nominations and honored by a warm welcome which corroborates what we have always believed, that great television is great television regardless of where, when, and how it is enjoyed,” said Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos in a statement.
