Maker Studios and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Give ‘Next Time on Lonny’ a Second Season
Maker Studios is partnering with Red Hour Digital, the digital subsidiary of Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films, to produce the second season of an independently produced faux-reality web series called “Next Time on Lonny.”
“Next Time on Lonny” parodies the reality-television format. Each episode begins with a scene that you would typically find in any reality show on TV, complete with talking heads and a constantly moving camera. When the short scene ends, the episode cuts to a “Next time on…” segment, except here, the segment is always absurd and over-the-top, and not actually a preview what happens in the next episode.
Created and independently produced by Alex Anfanger and Dan Schimpf, the first season of the show generated more than a million views across six episodes.
The second season, which will be distributed by Maker Studios, will premiere in early 2014. Maker has also agreed to promote and distribute the first season beginning in January as a way to bring the show to a larger audience.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Maker and Red Hour on season two. They’re incredible partners and have made it a priority to preserve the show’s insane spirit.” said Anganger and Schimpf in a statement. “That being said, we had our boom mic attached to a chair for season one so we’re definitely looking forward to a person to do this time around.”
Maker Studios’ VP of comedy Andy Vick echoed this sentiment, calling “Next Time on Lonny” a natural fit for his company as it “embraces an over-the-top humor that fans can’t get enough of.”
“Dan and Alex are the lifeblood of a new generation of comedy. Red Hour’s policy is to feed off of that blood in the time honored vampyric tradition of show-business,” added Ben Stiller.
Red Hour Digital, which is run by Mike Rosenstein, has a first-look deal with Paramount’s Insurge Pictures to distribute digital programming. The studio was famously behind another popular faux-reality series, “Burning Love,” which ran for three seasons on Yahoo. Red Hour is currently developing an animated web series tied to Stiller’s hit 2001 film, “Zoolander.”
Anfanger and Schimpf are repped by Lee Kernis and Brian Stern of Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Red Hour is represented by WME.Tags: Ben Stiller, comedy, Insurge Pictures, maker studios, MCNs, Paramount, Parody, Reality Series, Red Hour, youtube
