Exclusive: Mamrie Hart to Bring Boozy Memoir ‘You Deserve a Drink’ to Fans in 2015

Comedienne Mamrie Hart, one-third of a group that’s affectionately referred to as “YouTube’s Holy Trinity,” has inked a deal with Plume Books, a division of Penguin Random House, to write her first book — a part memoir and part mixology manual for custom cocktails created by Hart herself.

The book, “You Deserve a Drink,” is titled after Hart’s popular web series on YouTube. In the weekly series, Hart offers recipes for cocktails inspired by a trending topic. In some cases, she will mix a drink for a celebrity who, as the title suggests, deserves it. Hart now plans to extend this format to the written word, creating unique beverages tied to personal stories she shares in each chapter of the book.

“People constantly tell me to write a recipe book to compile everything,” says Hart, who launched “You Deserve a Drink” on March 13, 2011. “I’ve wanted to do a recipe book, but I’ve also wanted a way to tell my story.”

As Hart describes it, with the book version of “You Deserve a Drink,” she will finally share some of her funniest adventures, including tales of drunken exploits that she needs to write down before her “memory goes black.” While the format and structure are still being worked out, Hart’s goal is to match a new recipe with each chapter.

The book will cover a large portion of Hart’s life. “I went through everything, from when I was nine and my parents got divorced — which is actually a hilarious story — on up to things that happened six months ago,” says Hart. There will be adventures like the spring break Hart spent at an all-male nudist resort, to a recap of her first year in New York, during which she gained 25 pounds as a “starving artist.”

Though that doesn’t mean the stories will be told in chronological order. “I think you have to start out with a bang of a story,” adds Hart, laughing while adding: “Not that I wasn’t wild when I was nine years old, but I wasn’t topless or anything.” (Though Hart does have a college story about a topless women’s club, which will likely be in the book.)

“You Deserve a Drink” will be published in Summer 2015. Hart, who already has five chapters written as part of the initial book proposal, says she will also try to bring fans in on the writing process. Not everything is planned out, but as Hart and her fellow Trinity members Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart demonstrated with the marketing campaign for their upcoming feature film “Camp Takota,” having fans feel involved is important. “I think it’s going to be a really cool experience,” she says. “I would love to give them an inside peek into what it’s like to write a book.”

As for what Hart hopes to accomplish with her memoir, outside of sharing some of her most personal stories: “My whole brand of humor is self-deprecation — about owning your flaws and saying ‘Fuck you’ to anyone who doesn’t like it,” she says. “Hopefully that feeling will come across in [this book]. To where if you have a really embarrassing story, embrace it… Every story that I’ll tell will lead up to why I am why I am.”

And if this becomes Mamrie Hart’s version of Chelsea Handler’s, “Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea,” then even better.

Hart is repped by CAA and Vincent Nastri at Bleecker Street Entertainment. The deal with Plume was brokered by CAA. The funny lady currently has more than 413,000 subscribers and 15 million views on YouTube.
