Netflix Sets Christmas Eve Premiere Date for DreamWorks’ ‘Turbo FAST’
Netflix to also deviate from its practice of releasing every episode at once.
Netflix will debut its first original animated series, “Turbo FAST,” based on characters from DreamWorks Animation’s feature film “Turbo,” this Christmas Eve.
Produced by DreamWorks Animation as part of an original programming deal the studio signed with Netflix in June, “Turbo FAST” follows the adventures of a racing snail named Turbo and his “Fast Action Stunt Team.” Unlike the feature film, which featured 3D animation, the Netflix series features a 2D design.
In another departure from the norm, Netflix plans to premiere five new episodes on December 24, beginning at 12:01pm PT, before releasing additional episodes throughout 2014 — combining Netflix’s heavily-publicized binge-watching strategy with a model that feels more like linear television. UPDATE: In a statement, a Netflix spokesperson told us: “Production on animation is different timetable so we chose to make the episodes that are ready now, available for viewers as they were ready. “
The lead character will be voiced by Reid Scott (“Veep”). Ryan Reynolds voiced Turbo in the feature film. Comedian Ken Jeong (“Community,” “The Hangover”) is reprising his role as a manicurist-turned-home-shopping icon Kim Ly.
“Turbo FAST” was produced by DreamWorks Animation Television with production service support from Titmouse Inc. The series was executive produced by Chris Prynoski with additional producer credits going to Ben Kalina and Jennifer Ray. Turbo and other characters in the series were created by David Soren for the DreamWorks film, which grossed over $280 million worldwide this summer.
