Netflix Gets Funnier with Addition of Ricky Gervais Dramedy ‘Derek’
Internet TV distributor and now original content provider, Netflix, is contributing to its library of television properties with the addition of “Derek”, a bittersweet comedy-drama about “a group of outsiders living on society’s margins,” penned, directed and executive produced by British funny man, Ricky Gervais (“The Office,” “Extras”). Gervais, an Emmy- and Golden Globe-winner, also stars in the seven-episode first season, which is set to make its Netflix debut in its entirety on September 12.
The series will be available in all Netflix territories, except in the UK, where the show premiered on Channel 4 and has already been picked up for a second season.
While this is seemingly a pretty straightforward syndication deal, the interesting play here is that, once again, Netflix is pulling a TV-successful property from television to air exclusively on Netflix. It’s good to see another major talent striking syndication deals with online platforms rather than going straight for linear TV syndication.
Derek is produced by Derek Productions and also stars David Earl, Karl Pilkington and Kerry Godliman.
