Netflix Gives ‘Orange Is the New Black’ a Second Season

Netflix has ordered a second season for “Orange Is the New Black,” a prison dramedy from Jenji Kohan, the creator of “Weeds.”

Produced by Lionsgate Television, the series follows a recently incarcerated woman who must come to terms with the fact that her comfortable New York life is, at least temporarily, over. Based on the memoir by Piper Kerman, “Orange Is the New Black” stars Taylor Schilling, Jason Biggs, Laura Prepon, Kate Mulgrew, Natasha Lyonne, Pablo Schreiber, Danielle Brooks, Laverne Cox, and Taryn Manning.

The second season will begin production later this summer, which is remarkable considering the first season has yet to debut on Netflix.

In a statement, Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix, said: “Jenji and her team have produced a phenomenal series and we’re eager to get a second season to our viewers.”

The first season of “Orange Is the New Black,” which consists of 13 episodes, will be made available on July 11. The second season will also encompass 13 episodes.

With the second season pickup of “Orange Is the New Black” and “Hemlock Grove” (which it renewed last week), in addition to a planned second season for “House of Cards,” Netflix continues to make it very clear that it’s no longer a content warehouse. The company has said publicly that it sees HBO as a direct competitor. Those lofty ambitions have led the company to option original programming from big-name studios and talent.
