New Microsoft Windows 8 app gives big middle finger to YouTube - VideoInk

BREAKING: New Microsoft Windows Phone 8 app strips ads, enrages YouTube

Microsoft has apparently launched a new official YouTube app for the Windows Phone 8 and seemingly resolved the feud it had with Google. Or did the app in fact make it worse? Sources too fearful to bite the hand that feeds them to give their names say it’s the latter.  In fact, YouTube is “about to go nuts.”

The current incarnation of the Microsoft/Google feud goes like this: Microsoft claims Google has been blocking Windows Phone 8 access to YouTube metadata, including search on various video categories, favorites, and ratings. Google has intentionally blocked out Microsoft, the company claims, because it allowed Android and iOS phones access to this same metadata denied to them.

The new official Windows YouTube app created by Microsoft means this feud may be over reports CNET,  but according to an unnamed source at YouTube, the new app allows ad stripping and video downloading. Both ad stripping (ie, ad removal) and video downloading via the mobile app are violation of Terms of Service.

In fact, YouTube is so pissed, they’ve gone ahead and started calling up YouTube community leaders and top talent to speak out against Microsoft, as part of a “grassroots PR campaign against Microsoft,” writes one leader who received a call but wishes to remain anonymous. Another anonymous source who was approached calls the campaign less against Microsoft and more raising awareness as to why ad stripping is bad for the creator community.  YouTube celebrities rely on ads to make a living, after all.

We’ve reached out to YouTube for an official response and will update if we hear back.
