Newsy to Launch 30-minute TV ‘Newscast’

/ Jun 27, 2013

Online video news provider Newsy is launching a new TV “newscast” on Portico TV, a connected TV streaming service from Net2TV.

Newsy traditionally produces short news videos, usually two-minutes long, for its website and mobile apps as well as an array of content partners, including most recently MSN News. Per the deal, Net2TV will package these original videos into a 30-minute “show” called “Newsy in 30.” The coverage will span world and domestic news, politics, science, health, entertainment, and sports.

“Newsy in 30” will be added to Portico’s programming lineup beginning next month, and will be updated throughout the day as news stories break.

Net2TV’s Portico TV service is designed to bring web video content to the TV screen, but in a way that aligns with how people watch TV — longer individual viewing sessions due to programs being traditionally 30-, 60-, or 90-minutes long. Net2TV packages short video clips into longer television-length “shows,” which are made available via interest-based channels like food, science and technology, and entertainment. Some web video providers that Net2TV has deals with — like Discovery’s Revision3, CBS Interactive’s CHOW.com, and now Newsy — get their own branded channels.

Net2TV monetizes Portico via custom-ad packages available for each channel. Net2TV splits ad revenue with its content partners.

Portico TV is available on Philips Smart TVs and in late July will arrive on Roku devices. Last month, Net2TV announced the deal with Roku, saying at the time that Portico was scheduled to launch on Roku in late June. That date, obviously, has been pushed back.
