WIGS Kickstarts Production on ‘Susanna’, Paquin to Star
WIGS is producing “Susanna,” a new drama starring Anna Paquin from “True Blood” and Maggie Grace from “Lost.” The two will play sisters, one (Paquin) the mother of a newborn who is struggling with postpartum depression, the other (Grace) a high-powered investment banker who now has to juggle her professional aspirations with taking care of her sister’s baby.
The 12-episode drama, which is scheduled to arrive on WIGS’ YouTube channel later this spring, is written and directed by Avnet, with Rob Benedict and Virginia Madsen rounding out the cast.
WIGS holds the belt as the most prominent drama channel within YouTube’s premium channels initiative. The channel focuses exclusively on telling stories about and relevant to women, with each show titled after its main character.
Launched by Avnet, Garcia, and Jake Avnet in May 2012, the channel signed a multi-year programming, marketing, and distribution deal with Fox Broadcasting earlier this year. Under the terms of the deal, WIGS and Fox would work together to market the channel, as well as potentially use WIGS as an incubator for future broadcast franchises.
In announcing “Susanna,” WIGS also debuted a new off-YouTube website that lets users access all of its shows from one central hub. A product of that Fox deal, perhaps? In any case, it’s another example of a YouTube media company or content provider building a presence off of the video site. Right now, WIGS’ site is offering central access to all of its programming. But what’s not to say that eventually it doesn’t also become an additional source of revenue, one that wouldn’t need to be split with YouTube?
