YouTube Co-Founders Launch MixBit to Turn Everyone into a Filmmaker

/ Aug 8, 2013

After teasing it during this year’s South by Southwest festival, YouTube co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen introduced a new video capturing, editing, and sharing app today called MixBit.

MixBit shares some similarities with the two most popular social video sharing services out there right now, Instagram and Vine. It allows users to shoot up to 16 seconds of video per clip.

What makes MixBit different is that the app is designed to be a collaborative video-creation tool for longer pieces of user-generated content. A MixBit video can be anywhere from a few seconds to 68 minutes long. Users also have the ability to search for other people’s public videos and insert them into their videos. The maximum number of clips that can be inserted into a MixBit movie is 256.

Once the MixBit video has been edited, users can share it to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and MixBit (doesn’t look like users will have the ability to upload these videos to YouTube).

In a lot of ways, the app, which is currently available on iOS devices and will soon come to Android, feels like a souped-up tool to create and edit personal movies. Hurley told Fast Company that there are plans to eventually introduce storyboarding and scriptwriting capabilities into MixBit, which opens up the possibility of more professional-type content showing up on the app. It’s also easy to imagine a use-case for YouTube stars, who can potentially use an app such as MixBit to collaborate with others to create a piece of content. Of course, that requires getting users to watch content away from YouTube, but you’re probably tired of hearing that.
