3 Types of Audience Members You Might Be Missing on YouTube

/ Sep 10, 2014

Many YouTube creators take for granted that online viewers can and will understand their videos. However, this attitude discounts a whole lot of potential audience members. What exactly does that mean? Well, if you’re creating the average YouTube video, here are some viewers the YouTube Creator Playbook suggests you might be leaving behind…

1. Viewers Who Are Deaf/Hard of Hearing

According to the World Health Organization, some level of serious hearing loss affects upwards of 5% of the world’s population. To help that 5+% understand your videos, use the Transcribe and Sync tool on the digital video platform. All you have to do is type out the words to your video, and YouTube will do the rest (i.e. sync them to the video’s action).

2. Viewers Who Don’t Speak Your Language

Making your videos accessible to those speaking languages from all over the world is actually very easy. All it takes is one caption track upload and your viewers will have access to a transcription of your video in 58 languages. These captions might not always be the most spot-on, so use Google’s Translator Toolkit to make edits yourself or invite others to create better translations for you.

Also, keep in mind that providing other language translations in your videos makes them searchable in those languages, too, allowing for more viewers to accidentally come upon your content.

3. Viewers Who Live Near Your Biggest Fans

Say you’ve provided various translations and found that you now have a surprising number of fans in…Germany. If you feel up to it, you can use that knowledge (provided by the Top Fans feature on YouTube) to create another channel that directly targets your fans and their friends/neighbors in that country. Then, the YouTube Trends feature can help you figure out what’s popular in Germany so you can build new content from there.

Reaching out to German creators, in this hypothetical scenario, can also help get your new channel off that German soil. This will make you more personable when it comes to your international fan base, and it will let them know that you care about what’s going on in their world.

One thing always important to mention when discussing captions is that they don’t appear on phones! The only way to do both computer and phone/tablet is to place your own captions in the video (which makes the track un-searchable. Jessica, you should do a story about what Youtube is doing to correct this! 30% to 50% of views now comes from phones!

That’s a great point Ran. Adobe Premier CC has a pretty useful captioning feature built in that they just released. It’s still a little wonky to use from a user experience perspective, but it’s something. I know Adobe is expensive for some folks, but most captioning software I’ve seen very expensive. You can export the interlaced video. On another note, the YouTube app for iPhone lets you activate CCs.
