VI-Voices: The Rise of Digital at Sundance and the Festival Circuit

/ Jan 20, 2014

Was this the year that digital truly broke through at the Sundance Film Festival, and the festival circuit in general? How?

Alex Angeledes, CRO, Collective Digital Studio:

“I think that much like what we’re already seeing so far this the year with regards to digital video being really being embraced and pursued by brands and their agencies, this was a breakthrough year for digital companies and creators at Sundance. You look at the partnerships struck this year between the film festival and YouTube, Amazon, iTunes, to name a few, and the ubiquitous presence of online brands and filmmakers — from YouTube and Vimeo to Freddie Wong — and you can’t help but think this is another prime example of a major digital transformation.”

David Tochterman, Head of Digital Media, Innovative Artists:

“It was great to see YouTube come in with a big presence — live streaming events and making the shorts available online. Certain indie films are now being made available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon, so digital is becoming relevant as a platform on the festival circuit. I don’t think major festival films will ever be screened online, but it is definitely an evolution to see so many tech companies on Main Street!”

Derek Callow, Director of Creator Marketing, YouTube:

“We are excited to see independent filmmakers experimenting with digital. We see this with formats and distribution approaches. We are also in the middle of an amazing partnership with the Sundance Institute to deliver the Sundance experience to audiences around the world. A great story playing out this week here in Park City is tied to the feature film ‘Dear White People.’ After posting a trailer on YouTube, they struck a chord with a global audience, which led to funding for a feature film. Throughout the filmmaking process they used YouTube to connect with their fans, filming videos about all aspects of their production. We look forward to seeing more creators innovate with storytelling on YouTube.”

Kerry Trainor, CEO, Vimeo:

“No doubt this will be the biggest year yet for direct digital distribution at Sundance. Across the global festival ecosystem, it feels like 2014 will be the year digital becomes a primary part of films’ distribution strategies rather than a fallback. The fact that Vimeo will be the exclusive digital premiere platform for nearly 10% of the world premiere films from the 2013 Toronto Film Festival shows us the direct distribution movement continues to gain momentum worldwide.”
