VI-Voices: Where’s the Next ‘Hit Show’ Coming From?

Who’s primed to create the next big online video “hit”? (Other than Netflix.)

Josh Entman, Co-founder and Chief Development Officer, Jukin Media:

“I wouldn’t be surprised if HBO goes all in on long-form, digital-only series in a direct response to the ‘House of Cards’ model. They’ve previously flirted with short-form comedies exclusively on HBO GOo, but those were met with generally low expectations. In an increasingly competitive market where US subscribers on Netflix have outgrown that of HBO, and with the recent announcement that Netflix will raise $400 million in debt to fund original content, I’m hopeful that HBO will counter with their own sizable commitment to digital programming. I think it’s now up to HBO — which claims that Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix have no discernible effect on their business — to truly innovate and change rather than end up like Blockbuster.”

Nathan Brown, GM of Video, Complex Media:

“If the question is ‘who in digital is going to risk $100 million (or more) on a single series?’ then in my opinion, the answer is no one, at least in the near term. That said, there are many of us out there with capital, distribution, and a willingness to take chances. Certainly Jordan [Levin] joining forces again with Nancy [Tellem] at Xbox Entertainment Studios could produce some really interesting things, and no one should discount Amazon’s potential. It’s an arms war and it remains to be seen who will drop the next hit.”

“I think Amazon is best positioned to be in second place behind Netflix for high quality, big-talent original programming. That and they have the next most robust (or possibly more robust) streaming infrastructure and subscription model to see the dollars flow in if they land a hit.”

“‘The User’ — Vine, Instagram, Mixbit, Cameo, Flipagram, Directr, and more are making it easier and easier for the average person to make it big with their cell phone, a GoPro camera, or yes, even an iPad.”
