Addicted to Comments: Shay Carl’s YouTube Fascination

/ Mar 3, 2014

What do you do when you’re stuck in a job you hate but have three kids and a wife to support? If you’re Shay Carl, you start YouTubing as an outlet…until it becomes your full-time job. Carl told how he went from ‘Tubing for fun to doing it as a career on a recent episode of “Ear Biscuits with Rhett & Link.”

Carl “got a computer, got online, and found Philip DeFranco” when he was 27, a little late for someone to make a career on the internet. What Carl fell for most online was the social aspect of the whole thing. “I was addicted to the conversation,” he admitted.

The comments below the videos are actually what ended up getting Carl his start making videos and getting viewers. In fact, a conversation he was having in the comments section of another YouTube video (a long story in itself, touching upon Carl’s religion as a Mormon) generated his first video, which in turn gave him subscribers to his channel.

From there, the aforementioned DeFranco helped Carl take the steps to becoming a paid YouTuber. “The second I realized I could get paid on YouTube, I thought I could be a part of this community and…this discussion,” Carl said before noting how impressed he was with DeFranco’s show at the time. As wowed as he was by Phil’s production, Carl was convinced he could do the same thing.

Carl’s realization came at an opportune time, just when DeFranco uploaded a video on how to get a popular show on YouTube. Carl entered, and though he didn’t get first prize, DeFranco reportedly liked his content and promoted him on his channel. Of course, promotion from such a popular ‘Tuber helped funnel subscribers into Carl’s channel. He went up by “3,000 subscribers in like a day” with DeFranco’s recognition. Then, the Google Adsense checks starting coming in.

A passion for commenting and a fortuitous fan jumpstarted Carl’s success on the online video platform. To hear how the entertainer kept up his momentum, listen to the rest of his interview on Rhett & Link’s “Ear Biscuits.”
