The Birth of ‘Ear Biscuits’ and a Beautiful Partnership
If you didn’t already know, Rhett & Link’s newest “Ear Biscuits,” in which they interviewed each other (for a change) on the topic of “childhood,” revealed that the best friends go way back. In fact, their professional partnership extends almost as long as their friendship — at least in theory.
In other words, the YouTube creators decided that they were going to work together as adults when they were still in elementary school. Growing up in “the kind of place where you didn’t think about careers in entertainment or comedy,” Rhett said that though the two didn’t know what they wanted to do together, they knew they wanted to do “something big.”
As Link recalled, “We didn’t talk about entertainment at first… We certainly knew we liked to entertain and…take advantage of any audience we could find, but we [lacked] the definite idea that we were going to be filmmakers.”
Of course, the natural progression of coming to such a decision as kids involves making a blood oath. Rhett & Link wrote down their amorphous plan, cut themselves, and sealed the deal with blood.
The YouTube creators also had a system set up in their childhood hangout spot that they describe as a near precursor to “Ear Biscuits.” In their small North Carolina town, the guys spent lots of time hanging out in a cow pasture. When they weren’t chasing the cows, they chatted on two rocks, one big and one small. “Whoever was sitting on the big rock got to talk,” Link explained, while the one on the small rock had to listen.
This is the spot where Rhett & Link dreamt up ideas for their future. While Link bet that the “whole future bend” came from Rhett’s mind, he admitted to mostly creating the rules of the rocks. With a clear passion for interviewing and working as a team early on, it’s no wonder that Rhett & Link are able to maintain such a successful partnership today.
