6 Halloween Videos We Think You’ll Love — or Else

/ Oct 30, 2014

As always, the internet’s paying some serious homage to scariest holiday of the year (besides your birthday, depending on how old you are). Halloween has ushered in creepy content from the likes of Nerdist, PBS Digital, Fandor, and, of course, YouTube.

Thus, we decided to shine the digital video spotlight on the spookiest, funniest, and most inventive movies, ads, and shorts you’ll have access to this Hallows’ Eve. If you scare easy, keep the lights on while you watch the following…BOO!

“The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”

Fandor, a streaming video service for film buffs, is giving the public a little Halloween gift: “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” restored in 4K for free on October 31 only (use of Fandor usually requires a subscription). The classic horror flick is available on Fandor along with other scary greats, all a part of a grouping called “Stranger Danger,” which went live on the site October 16. The collection includes films like “Night of the Living Dead,” “Night Train to Terror,” and “Inferno.” If you prefer blood-drenched popcorn and horror flicks to gracing a Halloween party in your best sexy cat costume, Fandor’s your Hallows’ Eve web destination.

“The Real Housewives of Horror”

Offering yet another spoof of the reality franchise everyone loves to hate, Nerdist presents “The Real Housewives of Horror.” This means that instead of being married to financiers, business moguls, and trust fund daddies, they’re forever entwined with the likes of poltergeists, slashers, and evil toys. It’s genuinely entertaining to see how the creators tweaked the usual cast of “Housewives” characters to fit with typical horror movie plotlines.

“Why I’m Scared of Spiders”

PBS Digital Studios has a pretty robust Halloween programming slate it’s in the midst of rolling out. Spooky episodes of “Coma Niddy,” “PBS Game/Show,” “PBS Idea Channel,” and “It’s Okay to Be Smart” all preceded Halloween day’s season final of “Frankenstein, MD,” in which “tragedy” supposedly hits Victoria Frankenstein and her Mary Shelley inspired creation. Before that takes place, you can learn why it is that people (maybe you?) are so afraid of spiders.

“Telekinetic Coffee Shop Surprise”

At the top of Unruly’s “Scary Ads” chart, “Telekinetic Coffee Shop Surprise” has earned over 59 million views since it was posted last October (an oldie but goodie, it holds the number one spot). Unruly also reports over 2.3 million shares of the prank that doubles as a “Carrie” trailer across Facebook, Twitter, and various blog posts. Taking place in a West Village coffee shop in Manhattan, the telekinetic prank uses remote-controlled tables and spring-loaded books to bring “Carrie” to unsuspecting caffeine seekers. Other video ads that make the list include one for Little Baby’s Ice Cream (definitely worth watching) and a Dirt Devil as the demon in “The Exorcist.”

“Can You Survive?”

This choose-your-own-adventure video on YouTube Nation took advantage of the Guillermo Del Toro/Legendary Halloween set at the YouTube Space LA. Cast members include famous YouTubers like Felicia Day, Miles Gray, Tay Zonday, Michelle Glavan, Sparky Sweets, Lizzie Bassett, and FouseyTube. Interactive content like this is always fun, but it’s even better when you’re dealing in the mystery/horror genre. “Can You Survive?” is like playing Clue, but with your favorite YouTube creators.

“The Room”

The above wasn’t the only video to use the YouTube Space sets inspired by Guillermo Del Toro. Of those video creators who officially submitted to the contest, six of them won “creative consultations” with Del Toro via Google Hangouts. Two came from Tokyo, two were from LA, and one each hailed from London and New York. All six videos were worthy of their creators’ Google Hangout prizes, but one from Tokyo was especially chilling. Let’s just say they made great use of “The Room” they shot the video in.
