‘The Fault in Our Stars’ Live Concert Sings Our Infinities at YouTube Space LA

/ May 15, 2014

There’s a moment in acclaimed author John Green’s “The Fault in Our Stars” where one of the characters describes the precious intimacy some readers feel for books that serve as their escape from reality.

“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book,” she says, describing “books so special and rare and yours that advertising your affection feels like a betrayal.”

It’s a raw and honest statement about how deeply personal the story of another can become to the individual receiving it, and how, through literature, we discover more about ourselves.

However, despite this remarkable insight into the transportive power of reading, John Green maintains he never believed that “The Fault in Our Stars” would become one of those seminal pieces that would come to be embraced by a generation.

Looking out at the sea of faces at YouTube Space LA as Green shares this sense of awe over his novel’s evolution, you can’t help but feel pangs of triumphant jubilation for the author. More than a best-seller, “The Fault in Our Stars” has emerged to be a veritable pop-culture phenomenon, inspiring a passionate fan base of millions.

As such, the much-lauded book has now made its transition from page to screen, and Green and the film’s stars gathered last night before the aforementioned audience for a one-of-a-kind celebration of the upcoming movie and its soundtrack.

A special live event announced by Atlantic Records and 2oth Century Fox, “The Fault in Our Stars” Live Stream Event at YouTube DSCN3525Space LA featured appearances from film stars Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, and Nat Wolff, as well as Green himself. The special also included performances from “TFioS” soundtrack contributors Charli XCX, Grouplove, and Ed Sheeran.

The event, emceed by YouTube superstar Tyler Oakley, was truly a joyous gathering for devoted fans of “The Fault in Our Stars,” and offered up its share of unique moments.

In addition to an outstanding performance of her song “Boom Clap” from the film’s soundtrack, Charli XCX also treated those in attendance to an exclusive sneak peek of the upcoming music video for the track. As an added bonus to the world of exclusives, Green and company brought along a clip from the film that had never before screened for any outlet or venue.

As the concert rolled forward, Grouplove brought the house down with their song “Let Me In,” which provided a perfect energetic segue for Oakley to sit down with the film’s cast to dish about their experience in bringing the beloved novel to life.

“Generally on a film set there’s one or two days that feel really special or different than the other ones.” Woodley, who plays protagonist Hazel, said. “But every single day of this movie kept getting better and better. We had 38 of the best days ever.”

“I always thought that when you make a movie it gets watered down somehow, that too many people come in and get involved,” adds Green, “But the truth is, when its at its best, people come into it and make it better. Make it stronger. Shailene brought things to Hazel I’d never seen. Nat brought things to Isaac I’d never seen. Ansel brought things to Gus I’d never seen. The more people that came in, it just got better and better. I’m grateful for all these people coming to the movie and sharing their talents.”

One such talent comes in the form of Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran, whose contribution to the film’s soundtrack, “All of the Stars,” made immediate waves in the fan community the second it was announced. Taking the stage to close out the evening’s festivities, Sheeran not only treated eager fans to a performance of his current hit single “Sing,” but performed “All of the Stars” live for the first time ever. From the thunderous applause that followed, it was clear that this was the perfect cherry on top of an evening celebrating John Green’s remarkable work that has captured the hearts of so many.

However, not wanting to exclude those who weren’t able to come to the Space to join in the festivities, Green made a special, exclusive announcement on how fans around the country could participate in their own way.

“We get to announce something today that we’re really excited about, that no one has heard about before: The Night Before Our Stars,” said Green. “The movie comes out on June 6, but the night before, there’s going to be a special screening of the movie around the country in more than 500 theaters. On June 5, 8:30pm Eastern/5:30 pm Pacific, fans who go to this screening will be among the first to see the movie, and they will also be part of the largest simulcast in the history of movies. Shailene, Nat, Ansel, myself, and the director of the movie, Josh Boone, will all be doing a live Q&A that will air immediately after the movie, and you can only see it by going to one of these first showings.”

With such an enthusiastic audience in attendance at YouTube Space LA, and now a new avenue for those across America to celebrate, John Green has further ensured that those devoted to “The Fault in Our Stars” will have their opportunity to share their affection for the book in a way that Hazel could only have dreamed.

In the meantime, however, thanks to the extraordinary talents of the film’s cast and all the musical artists gathered, “The Fault in Our Stars” event became a worldwide trending topic and pulled in millions of viewers around the globe. For a novel that Green never fully expected to have this reach, it’s an impact that is undeniable.

“The Fault in Our Stars” is a beloved piece to many of us now, and thanks to last evening’s event at YouTube Space, we had the rare opportunity to take our praises and sing them.
