‘Game of Thrones’… Remixed

/ Jun 2, 2014

Each week, HBO’s “Game Of Thrones”  inevitably breaks hearts and the social media world blows up accordingly. Last night’s “The Mountain and the Viper” was no exception as another beloved character met a particularly gruesome end and Twitter basically exploded. (What, too soon?)

While the show is incomparable to anything else on television, many creators on YouTube have managed to find comparisons to other beloved shows from the past and present. When mashed together in various ways, the result is rarely completely flawless, but often the source of some good laughs and great puns.

Check out a few of the best (and unlikely) “Game of Thrones” mashups on the web.

1. “Game of Thrones” + “House of Cards” = “House of Thrones”

Produced by Quiznos-sponsored Toasty TV, this mashup of “Game of Thrones” and “House of Cards” is pretty spot on. Despite the different genres, the two shows’  backstabbing characters and dark tone make for a seamless combination. “Game of Thrones” fan or not, the video is worth watching for Ross Marquand’s Frank Underwood impression.

The video even caught the attention the real Frank Underwood himself, as Kevin Spacey tweeted a link to the video commenting “We weren’t sure what should happen in #HouseOfCards Season 3 but I think I’ve figured it out.” With Spacey’s endorsement, it’s no wonder that the video quickly surpassed 1.5 million views in just a few days.

2. “Princess Bride” + “Game of Thrones”

Cinestir TV’s “Princess Bride Promo” for Game of Thrones season three is almost eerie considering last night’s Oberyn’s fatal Indigo Montoya-esque revenge attempt. This video combines clips from the first season of “Game of Thrones” scenes from the classic “Princess Bride.” Three seasons later, it still works, like Fred Savage, we all may be taking the story a little too seriously.

3. “Game of Thrones” + Seinfeld

Adding a laughtrack goes a long way. Mavin Comedy’s “Game of Thrones as a Seinfeld Sitcom” cues the “Seinfeld” soundtrack and laugh track to serious moments from “Game of Thrones,” and the result is funnier than you might expect — probably because most of the video is Peter Dinklage in his bitch-slapping element. Ten points for irony.

4. “Game of Thrones”+ “Arrested Development”

Cracked nails the style and narration of “Arrested Development” using all footage from “Game of Thrones” season three. With too many puns to count, the cheerful, Ron Howard-like narration puts a quirky spin on the dark series. Not that I suggest ever rewatching the Red Wedding, but if you’re feeling masochistic, this might be the most bearable way to do it.

5. “Game of Thrones” + NBA = “Game of Zones”

The NBA may not be a movie or show, but the drama that surrounds the draft and the playoffs aren’t far off. This animated video from the Bleacher Report is pretty legit, from warnings that “The playoffs are coming,” and a cameo from appropriately cast LeBron Lannister-James.
