Hacking the YouTube ‘Creator Playbook’: Happy Holidays!

With our tips on playlists under your belt, you should now have a pretty good sense of how to package your YouTube content. This skill will help you out with our next step in hacking the “Creator Playbook”: creating tentpole programming. Focused on taking advantage of major holidays and pop culture events, tentpole programming will get your channel plenty of attention…if you do it right. Here’s how to make the holiday season work towards your personal promotion:

1) Use Your Calendar: We’ve already gone over regular scheduling for your content, but let’s take this one step further and look at the whole year in advance. Mark up your calendar with deadlines pertaining to major holidays so that you remember, when Christmas is a month away, to create something merry with red and green accents…or something sardonic about family get-togethers. Whatever works best for your brand.

2) Pick Up on Search Trends: If you notice that this year’s Halloween trend focuses on zombies over vampires, go with that! Make your titles match current search trends, and your latest zombie video might just be the one to go viral this October.

3) Use Those Playlists: The playlists you learned to optimize last week can be reformulated to fit an upcoming tentpole event. If you have videos that all center on romance, group them in a playlist that you release around Valentine’s Day.

4) Don’t Hesitate to Rebrand Old Content: Like the former tip, you can take older videos and rebrand them for a specific time of year or pop culture happening. Fresh titles and tags will help you make prior content relevant to current events.

5) Release Your Content in Advance: It doesn’t do you much good to display all of your Oscar-related videos the day of–people are preoccupied with the Oscars themselves at that point. Rather, bring that content to the forefront of your channel a week (or more, depending on the magnitude of the event) before the event it relates to. Use the drug store model of Easter in February (but perhaps in a less exaggerated way).

6) Create Your Own “Holiday”: The “Creator Playbook” mentions the Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week, a self-created tentpole event that people all over the world look forward to. Tattoo shops even have shark week specials (50% off any shark tattoo!). Why not be bold and make your channel’s own version of the famous, underwater special? We’ll leave it to you to decide on particular, creative content.
