Hacking the YouTube ‘Creator Playbook’: Polish Your Channel

/ Mar 11, 2014

Congratulations! You now know how to reel in an audience on YouTube and get them to act on your channel that contains a regular video lineup, playlists, and features tentpole programming. Now, let’s close out programming tips from the “Creator Playbook” by highlighting your overall “channel experience.” Remember, great content is nothing without consistency.

Here are some the tips we’ve already learned, rehashed so as to ensure you’ve got the big picture when it comes to your new YouTube channel:

1) Remind Viewers of Your Channel: In every video you post, let your viewers know that what they’re watching exists in a channel to which they can subscribe.

2) Link Within Your Videos: Use annotations, video descriptions, etc. to provide ways for viewers to click to more of your content. Make it easy for them to find you and help spread awareness of your online presence.

3) Create Obvious Packaging: Brand your channel in a way that showcases exactly what you do, who you are, and how to watch you do it. Again, make yourself as accessible as possible to your audience.

4) Keep It Personal: Let your audience know that you’re talking to them. YouTube is a unique platform in which content creators get to truly bond and connect with their fans. Reply to comments and speak directly to viewers in your videos when appropriate.

5) Maintain Regularity: Scheduling, playlists, and tentpole programming will all help you do this. It’s so important to increasing watch-time that we just had to mention it again.

6) Use That Metadata: The “new metadata defaults feature” will help ensure that you have a link to your channel along with its description attached to every video.

Also, take advantage of “In-video Programming,” new features that will help you promote your channel:

1) Create an Avatar/Channel Logo: Make something that viewers will recognize and instantly connect to your channel. Upload it as a means to arrive at your channel page. YouTube lets you connect such logos with all of your content, giving viewers the opportunity to go from one of your videos to all of them.

2) Schedule Promotions, Too: In addition to having new content come out on set days each week, you should also pick out a day when you change the old content you’re promoting on your page. Bringing up old hits can help remind audience that there’s more to your YouTube channel than what they’re waiting for each Thursday.

3) But Keep Promoting the New…: In-video Programming also lets you start promoting your new content the moment you upload it. It directs your channel’s audience directly to your freshest work.

4) Keep Tabs on Your Channel: Use YouTube analytics to figure out how In-video Programming (and everything else you do) may be influencing your viewership and watch-time. Analytics covers everything from audience retention to the effectiveness of your annotations.

With a holistic view of your YouTube presence, you are now ready to present your ‘Tubing self to the world. Stick around to learn how to do this in the most effective way possible.
