Harley Morenstein from ‘Epic Meal Time’: The YouTube Yoda

No one performs on YouTube in a vacuum. Though the ‘Tube community may not be as tight knit as the crew back in the early 2000s, those who get the most views communicate and influence each other all the time. A single tweet from a seasoned YouTuber to an up-and-coming creator can make a world of a difference in his or her YouTube career.

This happened for Superwoman (real name: Lilly Singh) when she mentioned “Epic Meal Time” by Harley Morenstein (a.k.a. The Sauce Boss) in one of her earlier videos. Her shout-out led to Morenstein following her on Twitter, which in turn resulted in their eventual meeting in Toronto. “We had the best conversation ever,” Singh said of meeting him, via an interview with Rhett & Link for their podcast “Ear Biscuits.” Morenstein filled Singh in on “the whole business aspect” of YouTube. Videos alone don’t make a YouTube career. Morenstein let Singh in on info about his merch, conferences, and conventions. Now Singh herself travels as far as Australia and (very soon) India to meet fans and promote her channel.

“I feel like everyone should have a conversation with Harley,” Singh said of the YouTube guru. This ‘Tuber’s advice extends to a career in entertainment outside of the online platform. Since Singh explained that “YouTube is not [her] career, entertainment is,” she does look towards a future on the silver screen. Morenstein’s wisdom was at the ready to keep her in check.

According to Singh, Morenstein believes that people who get bigger deals and abandon YouTube as a result are doing something wrong — almost a disservice to their original fans. Not only would leaving YouTube make entertainers like Singh feel as if they were ignoring the fans who got them started, they would also be neglecting an excellent promotional platform.

This boils down to more wisdom from the YouTube Yoda, Morenstein: Keep posting videos even when you’re a movie star. Fans truly do create celebrities on YouTube, and the wise ones know to keep on giving back. Consistently creating content remains important to YouTube celebrities even if they move beyond the platform.
