iJustine Gets Nostalgic About Early YouTube Days on ‘Ear Biscuits’

Having been on the platform for about eight years, iJustine (real name Justine Ezarik) waxed nostalgic with Rhett & Link about the old days of YouTube. They spoke of her pioneering status and some current frustrations with the platform on the most recent “Ear Biscuits.”

Considered one of the first people to fit the “vlogger” title, Justine actually served as an inspiration to the likes of Jenna Marbles, which the latter admitted on her “Ear Biscuits” interview. Though Marbles fits in with the early YouTube crew, many of whom have graced Rhett & Link’s interview table, as Justine noted, the newer generation of YouTubers doesn’t quite possess the same, innocent charm.

Though Justine still loves YouTube, crediting it with her discovery that “there’s an audience out there for everything,” she seems somewhat disenchanted about the people currently trying to make a name there. “People now are just doing it because they want to be a YouTuber, I guess, so it’s different because we [the original ‘Tubing crew] were just having fun.”

However, Justine still sees this type of excitement and creation for fun’s sake over at another creator platform. It can never happen again on YouTube now that being a YouTube celebrity has become a thing, but Justine noted, “I’ve kind of seen that happen with Vine.” She recently got to meet a couple of the personalities blowing up over at Vine, and she happily said, “It’s been so long since I felt that feeling of the original YouTubers, and I can see it with them…It’s cool to see that same community happen on another platform.”

The difference is that for the people over at Vine, the transition from fun to fame happened in less than a year. For YouTubers like Justine, it took several before making funny videos turned into anything profitable. However, Vine’s format doesn’t translate particularly well to YouTube, where Justine and Rhett & Link all note having a tougher time getting an abundance of views.

Justine, for example, noted that the “frustration comes from knowing that I’m posting stuff and knowing that there are subscribers there that will never see it.” Fans still ask her about a lack of new videos, when she’s posted a bunch of videos on her channel that very week. She knows she’s got a huge audience, but feels like her access to them is not quite enough. Furthermore, she enjoys posting travel vlogs (since she’s been doing a lot of moving around as of late), but she has to keep reminding herself that her fans’ primary interests lie in technology.

Though it’s easy to “lose sight of what the audiences originally started subscribing for,” Justine believes that “YouTube will always be a part” of her bigger career picture. She went deeper into what this picture looks like on this week’s “Ear Biscuits with Rhett & Link.”
