‘MythBusters’ Star on Why He’s Blowing It Up Online
Tory Belleci of the new Discovery Digital Networks show “Blow It Up” really enjoys, as you may have guessed, blowing stuff up. He tells me this after I ask him why he started his new web show. According to Belleci, a longtime cast member of the television program “MythBusters,” while busting so many myths, his favorite part was always when they got to blow something up. So he decided to build a show around it.
Airing now on Discovery Digital Networks TestTube video network, “Blow It Up” is exactly what you’d expect given its ominous title. And while online video, for years, has had its share of videos and series dedicated to reducing objects to flaming ash, Belleci explains that “Blow It Up” is different for one very specific reason: the stories behind those objects.
“What if we had these things that were connected to awful memories and blew them up? That’s the hook,” Belleci explains. Sure, any maniac with a dirty bomb can blow up a Volvo, but why should we, as the audience, care about that? For Belleci and the “Blow It Up” crew, it is all about eradicating those nasty memories we sometimes attach to inanimate objects.
However, this is Discovery Digital’s science network, after all; blowing stuff up to figuratively and physically reduce memories is a bit too simplistic. “‘Blow It Up’ also goes into the science of why things blow up, Belleci explains. “A pound of C4 is much different than a pound of TNT.”
“Blow It Up” is Belleci’s first foray into web-native programming. Being a regular on “MythBusters” has provided the host for a great background for cable television, but what about web TV? According to Belleci, working on the web has allowed him to drop the standard “host” persona and adopt the casual, transparent tone often found online — a tone shared by some of Belleci’s favorite creators on YouTube, like Niko and Sam of CorridorDigital; and Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch.
Of course, no interview with Belleci would be complete without asking what he would love to blow up the most. His answer is perhaps more insane than either you or I could have guessed: “I’d want to blow up a tanker truck full of gas,” he explains. “I couldn’t even imagine how big that explosion would be.” Neither could we.Tags: blow it up, Discovery Digital Networks, Mythbusters, TestTube, Tory Belleci
