When Rhett & Link Were Kids… (Part Two)

A month ago, lifelong best friends Rhett & Link decided to do something different with their weekly “Ear Biscuits” podcasts — instead of interviewing another prominent YouTube creator in the space, the duo decided to turn the tables (so to speak) and interview each other. If successful, the two friends hoped to turn it into a monthly series.

“There’s something about the format,” says Rhett in this week’s “Ear Biscuits,” “that lends itself to a different level of authenticity.” Which is to say, sometimes the best person to interview, or be interviewed by, is someone who knows you inside and out.

Good news for them, and their fans, the experiment was a success. So this week, Rhett & Link are back at it again. You learned a little bit about their childhood last time. Now, for your reading pleasure, here are some more things you might not have known about Rhett & Link, specifically, what they were like growing up when it came to girls… Or as Link says, “Our experience with the greater sex.”

Rhett was obsessed with girls growing up. “From a very early age, I would say definitely by the first grade, the majority of my thoughts were directed at girls,” says Rhett. “And not just girls in general, I had a tendency to fixate on a girl, or a few girls, at a time.”

Link, meanwhile, was just doing his own thing. “I think I thought about girls a normal amount of time. It’d be 25% about girls, 25% about ‘GI Joe,’ 25% about what I’m going to eat, and 25% about school, friends, and everything else.”

Rhett & Link dated the same girl in the sixth and seventh grades — she was also each of their first kiss. “We are not making this up by the way,” says Rhett. “We had the same girlfriend and the same first kiss — small town.”

In the eighth grade, Link wound up dating the smartest girl in school — and that was weird. “Anna was the smartest girl in our school. And I remember finding out about [you two],” says Rhett. “First of all you’re my best friend, so this is nothing against you. But at the time I thought Anna was the smartest girl in school… and she’s dating Link? This doesn’t make any sense on any level.

In high school, Rhett gave some thought to what he was going to wear; Link was just into the “soccer thing” — umbros and soccer shoes. “I thought was the absolute dorkiest way anyone could possibly dress,” says Rhett.

One time, Link found himself the unwitting participant of the schemes of two heart-broken girls — at the same dance. He was asked to the dance by one girl who was mending a broken heart (and who had been dating someone who looked just like Link). Then at the dance, he ended up dancing with another girl, who had just been dumped by Rhett.

“I heard that and I was like, Link, that’s awesome,” says Rhett, and referenced how guys don’t typically care when girls try to scheme to make them jealous. “Of course you didn’t do anything about it,” says Rhett. To which Link responds: “Nope.”

In fact, if there was one consistency, it was that Rhett was crazy about girls, and Link wouldn’t know how to act. “If there was an opportunity to entertain a group of people, say in the middle-school cafeteria or in video form, I am very clear that I am able to step up to the plate and do something,” says Link. “When there’s something personal at stake, like relationships with girls, the anxiety level goes way up.”

That said, both men are cognizant of how little it actually matters to be dating in elementary school, middle school, and high school — even if it feels paramount at the time. “Fourteen is not the time for an exclusive relationship,” says Rhett. “It doesn’t make sense to have an exclusive relationships at that point in your life. Cause so many things are changing — so many things are fragile. You’re becoming someone so quickly, and so is the other person. Even if it might be difficult to have self-control in those situations, it’s worth it.”

For more on Rhett & Link’s history with girls, including more hilarious and awkward anecdotes, as well as the heartfelt lessons they learned that they wish to communicate to their own children, check out the latest “Ear Biscuits with Rhett & Link.”
