2013: A Year in Pictures

/ Dec 28, 2013

More than any year before, 2013 brought together some of the brightest minds working in the digital realm to discuss the ever-evolving web video space. From Marissa Mayer’s IAB MIXX interview with Charlie Rose to Grace Helbig’s heartfelt introduction of Hannah Hart at Buffer Festival (“Her style of comedy is something I really admire. It’s sweet and it’s not bitter or mean. It’s interesting and it has heart, quite literally.”), this year has given us some of the most insightful and interesting moments ever seen in digital video.

Below, we’ve compiled some of those moments as they were captured. These are the events, announcements, and meetings that shook the digital video space for better and for worse.

January – “House of Cards” season one premiere event.

With Netflix’s debut drama “House of Cards,” the streaming service redefined content seen outside of “traditional” TV models. “House of Cards” would go on to receive multiple award nominations, including four Golden Globe nods.

January – IAWTV Awards

Now on its second year, the IAWTV Awards honor the web series that are helping the digital video space evolve. This year’s ceremony awarded multiple dark horse web shows like “Squaresville”  (above), which won Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Writing, and Best Ensemble Performance.

February – Social Media Week LA

Social Media Week LA brought together some of the biggest names in tech from around the world. Speakers like ZEFR CEO Rich Raddon (above) met to discuss the constantly evolving web video space among other social and digital platforms.

May – Ray William Johnson partners with Blip

After parting ways with Maker Studios, Ray William Johnson and video platform Blip announced that they would begin working together. This moment signaled an important movement for creators looking to move beyond YouTube. It also showed that other video platforms (like Blip) were clearly interested in harnessing top YouTube talent.

May – YouTube NewFronts

Although YouTube has no new initiatives to launch at its NewFronts, Jeffrey Katzenberg (above) spoke at the event about DreamWork’s recent acquisition of multi-channel network AwesomenessTV. The $33 million purchase showed that traditional media companies were interested is (and willing to be for) online video.

May – Ynon Kreiz joins Maker Studios as CEO

After board members pushed out former CEO Danny Zappin, Ynon Kreiz (above) stepped in as the new studio head. Almost immediately after accepting the role, Kreiz began a host of Maker initiatives, including buying video platform Blip and spreading content across various specialized channels.
