YouTube Really Loves Minecraft, Like Really

/ Jun 7, 2014

When it comes to gaming and YouTube, which specific topics dominate?

In honor of our special gaming issue, VideoInk asked Tubular Labs to take a look at the top 10 videos across YouTube related to the most popular gaming topics. What they found was a little bit of “Call of Duty,” a dash of “Grand Theft Auto,” a hint of “Pokemon,” and a whole lot of Minecraft. Though you may very well dwell amongst the millions of people to have already seen these 10 videos, here’s your chance to see them again in order of ascending popularity. Sit back and watch the Minecraft song parodies get closer and closer together as your near #1…

10) “Surprise” – Official Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Live-Action Trailer by Call of Duty

  • Uploaded: 1 year ago

This clever “Call of Duty” trailer definitely embodies the element of surprise. And was that Robert Downey, Jr. “bringing a jet to a gunfight”?

9) “Pokemon in Real Life!” – by Smosh

  • Uploaded: 3 years ago

Smosh captures the genuine frustration behind what “playing” Pokemon would be like in real life. Watching a trainer battle play out between Magikarp and Pikachu actually makes you feel for the opponents who have nothing but splash attack to rely on.

8) “Grand Theft Auto V Trailer” – by Rockstar Games

  • Uploaded: 2 years ago

Providing an LA dreamscape, the “Grand Theft Auto V” trailer definitely sucks you into the game’s dark but oddly glamorous world. At least 39 million people were captivated by this trance-like trailer for a good reason.

7) “Take Back the Night” – A Minecraft Original Music Video by CaptainSparklez

  • Uploaded: 9 months ago

Part of TryHardNinja’s album, this song takes Minecraft to an epically musical level. You would never imagine so much emotion locked inside such a pixelated game.

6) “Minecraft Style” – A Parody of PSY’s ‘Gangnam Style’ by CaptainSparklez

  • Uploaded: 1 year ago

With appropriate “costumes,” this video mimics Psy’s “Gangnam Style” pretty expertly. The most clicked music video on YouTube turns out to lend itself easily to any genre, including gaming.

5) “I Can Swing My Sword!” (Minecraft Song) – by Tobuscus

  • Uploaded: 2 years ago

Master of the viral song (as his home page featured video exhibits), Tobuscus easily makes it into the top 5 here with, you guessed, a song about Minecraft. Focused on the all-important diamond sword, this video departs from Minecraft’s pixelated animation in favor of this YouTube creator’s cartoon style.

4) “Fallen Kingdom” – A Minecraft Parody of Coldplay’s Viva la Vida by CaptainSparklez

  • Uploaded: 2 years ago

Let’s cut the suspense, here. Be prepared for two more hits from CaptainSparklez after this one in the top 5. If you’re a Coldplay fan, this might impress you via its musical qualities. If you’re a Minecraft fan, then you must be enjoying all this, huh?

3) “TNT” – A Minecraft Parody of Taio Cruz’s Dynamite (Crafted Using Note Blocks) by CaptainSparklez

  • Uploaded: 3 years ago

Though Taio Cruz’s song peaked in popularity several years ago, this YouTube video is still going strong. Stay tuned until the very end if you’re interested in who made what part of the video and how.

2) Official Minecraft Trailer by TeamMojang

  • Uploaded: 2 years ago

Inviting you to “go to a place where everything is made of blocks,” this trailer elaborates on the seemingly endless possibilities that this extremely popular game presents. This is just a brief interlude before we return to more CaptainSparklez…

1) “Revenge” – A Minecraft Parody of Usher’s DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love (Crafted Using Noteblocks) by CaptainSparklez

  • Uploaded: 2 years ago

Winning the popular vote, this CaptainSparklez parody comes in at #1 on the gaming YouTube video chart. With TryHardNinja responsible for another set of Minecraft-related vocals, CaptainSparklez as usual provides the animation and post production while Bootstrap Buckaroo worked on the modeling, rigging, and “being the most helpful person ever,” according to the video’s credits. So here you have it, the all time most popular gaming related video on YouTube:
