How to Star in YouTube’s ‘18 and Older Club’: Totally Sketch
If you’re going to put up more mature content on a communal platform like YouTube, you’ve got to consider the potential hazards. The main obstacle for ‘Tubers like Gallagher lies in getting flagged. “I think when you push the envelope with censors…it’s sort of a boy scout system of, ‘We’re going to put something out here and it may get flagged, it may not’…you never know what’s going to go down,” Gallagher explained. Fortunately for him, Gallagher enjoys “toying with that invisible line.” Only 10 times in 200 has he actually crossed it.
In other words, Gallagher believes that around 10 of his 200 Totally Sketch videos have been flagged during his time on YouTube. This pushed Gallagher to learn about the flagging process and how to re-post a video after it’s been taken down.
First of all, you’ve got to be on the lookout for when a video of yours may have been removed from the site. “YouTube isn’t that vocal,” Gallagher noted, so it’s not as if some YouTube rep calls you up with an alert about every flagged video. Gallagher explained his “civilian” understanding of flagging leading to video removal as a “percentage thing.” An automated process determines whether a video gets taken down based on the number of times it is flagged out of the number of people who click on it.
Gallagher has overcome this obstacle in the past and managed to re-post flagged videos, an example being “The Low-Cut Shirt.” After noticing this video was no longer available on YouTube, Gallagher had to email the site to let them know that he didn’t break any content rules. It took a couple of days, but YouTube allowed “The Low-Cut Shirt” to remain online. Some of Gallagher’s most line-toeing videos get designated to YouTube’s “eighteen and older club,” for which you have to sign in and verify your age prior to viewing.
