Stream Market 2014: The Must-See List
We are a few days away from Stream Market 2014, the annual conference and marketplace for digital content producers organized by Toronto-based Brunico Communications. The two-day event aims to bring the entire digital video industry together, from studios and producers to video platforms and MCNs, to tackle the issues in producing and monetizing original digital content. In other words: stuff that matters. (So no, sorry, you won’t see Gwyneth Paltrow here.)
If you’re in LA and planning to attend, then check out the following list of sessions that you should not miss. (Note: The “30 Minutes With” sessions are closed to the press, which means, ideally, you’ll get intel that’s not the same thing you hear on every panel you’ve listened to.)
Breakfast with: Online commissioners
- Time: 9 am on Monday
Grab a coffee and croissant and find out first-hand what kind of content buyers are looking for. This is an informal networking opportunity with the likes of Anna Robertson, head of Yahoo Studios, and Peter Koeppen, head of production and executive producer digital video at Scripps Networks Interactive, among others.
When You Are the C –Suite: YouTube Creators
- Time: 10:45 am on Monday
YouTubers Grace Helbig and Mamrie Hart are among the panelists who will discuss heir DIY engagement strategies on this panel moderated by Bing Chen, who, as we know, recently left YouTube, where he served as global creator development and management lead. Perhaps he’ll share more about the “stealth startup” he’s moving on to? Perhaps not, but either way, Chen and the YouTubers (also featuring Tyler Ward and Meg DeAngelis) have built careers on YouTube and will have advice on how to conquer the medium.
Digital Power Plays: What’s Next for the Studios
- Time: 12 pm on Monday
Major studios and production houses have been making waves in the online space by launching their own digital divisions and investing in web content. Even with their big-name talent and big budgets, entering the world of digital entertainment likely hasn’t been easy, but it has had an impact on the market. This panel will feature Will Keenan, president of Endemol Beyond USA, Colin Decker, group operating officer, Discovery Digital Networks, Gayle Gilman, executive vice president, digital content at FremantleMedia North America, Robert Hayes, executive vice president, digital media, NBC Entertainment, and Jim Packer, president of worldwide TV distribution and digital at Lionsgate Entertainment, on how the studio system is embracing and adapting to the digital revolution.
30 Minutes With… Scripps Networks Interactive
- Time: 1:45 pm on Monday
Scripps is investing in a lot of digital content this year – and a lot of it will be distributed via its lifestyle video brand, ulive. If you’re a producer of a lifestyle show — and considering how popular the category is online, you probably are — this is a great chance to get face-time with Amy Emmerich, SVP of programming at ulive, and Stone Roberts, who serves as executive producer.
30 Minutes With… AOL
- Time: 9:45 am on Tuesday
When Ran Harnevo, president of video at AOL, was named a VideoInk Power-Sixer, he was described as a tell-it-like-it-is entrepreneur with zero tolerance for BS. He’s brought great success to AOL’s video initiatives and helped launch original shows that have received hundreds of millions of views. He’s also setting his company up for what he sees the future of video — where television and digital merge. So, as VideoInk said in his Power-Sixer profile, you should probably listen.
Jump into Bed with an MCN
- Time: 11:45 am on Tuesday
Everybody wants to! Execs from the most prominent MCNs, including Collective Digital Studio, AwesomenessTV, and Maker Studios, will speak about how they approach technology and talent, and how the impact of recent acquisitions (or in Fullscreen’s case, still-floating-around rumors of acquisitions) will have on their content and business partners.
A Windowless Future: Alternative Distribution Models
- Time: 1:30 pm on Tuesday
You keep hearing it over and over again: Online video business and distribution models are constantly changing. And no matter how you feel about the word “disruptors” label, it’s important to stay on top of new and alternative ways to sell and promote your content. Representatives from Mondo Media, BitTorrent, and Jumpwire Media will discuss recent methodologies they’ve employed and found success with.
30 Minutes With… Maker Studios
- Time: 2:30 pm on Tuesday
Maker Studios has been the talk of the town ever since Disney decided to acquire it for potentially $950 million. Since then, many people have been interested in Maker’s content, distribution, and monetization strategy. We heard a little during the company’s first ever Newfront presentation. Here’s your chance to find out even more in a closed session with the network’s chief content officer Erin McPherson.Tags: AOL, Bing Chen, Events, Grace Helbig, maker studios, MCN, Scripps Networks Interactive, Stream Market, Tyler Ward, Yahoo!, youtube, YouTube Creators
