The Top 10 UK YouTubers

/ Jan 4, 2014

With the majority of the “top” YouTubers calling the United States home, it’s easy to forget that other parts of the globe are producing some extraordinarily talented creators. No region exemplifies this better than the United Kingdom. With YouTube launching as a US phenomenon, it took our neighbors across the pond a minute to embrace the platform. However, when they did, it resulted in the creation of some of YouTube’s best and brightest channels.

With subscriber counts reaching higher than some kind of Victorian-era steam-powered zeppelin, these are the UK creators who are taking global small screens by storm.

10. Danisnotonfire

Subscribers: 2,993,712
Video views: 162,240,903

Self-defined as “the internet support group for people that hate people,” YouTube channel Danisnotonfire follows Dan Howell as he experiences a perpetual existential meltdown. Howell is known for the earnest bits of information he shares with his audience, including why he hates people and why people should hate him.

9. Jacksgap

Subscribers: 3,128,198
Video views: 133,689,599

It’s probably not surprising that two very handsome, very unthreatening identical twin brothers are on this list. The Harries brothers (Jack and Finn) are the UK’s answer to the Winklevoss twins, only they’ve forgone a legal battle with Facebook in favor of trying to swallow a tablespoon of cinnamon. Spoiler: The result is disastrous (below).

8. The Slow Mo Guys

Subscribers: 3,132,649
Video views: 299,149,850

The Slow Mo Guys (if you couldn’t guess by the name) are slow-motion artists. They take the acts of exploding, popping, throwing, and tossing and crank the speed down to a crawl — no, less than a crawl. In fact, most of The Slow Mo Guys videos are shot in a heart-stopping 2,500 frames per second. To put that in context, the industry standard for filming and projection formats is 24 frames per second.

7. Zoella280390

Subscribers: 3,346,996
Video views: 115,120,169

Jumping aboard the popular beauty/lifestyle vlog style, YouTuber Zoella has dedicated her channel to everything from beauty advice to DIY holiday recipes. To date, Zoella’s most popular video is a simple quick hairstyle guide, which has racked up over three million views in seven months.

6. Ali-A

Subscribers: 3,397,496
Video views: 632,117,940

If you don’t know what Call of Duty is, then the Ali-A channel probably won’t be for you. Although Ali-A does play other games, the YouTubers primary area of expertise is with the Call of Duty franchise. His videos include COD gameplay, reviews, and news.

5. KSIOlajidebtHD

Subscribers: 4,535,566
Video views: 655,192,021

Like Ali-A, KSIO (don’t ask me how to pronounce that) is all about games. Widening his focus a bit, KSIO typically uploads gameplay footage from games that are particularly popular at the moment. Recently, with the release of “Grand Theft Auto V,” the channel has been host to dozens of carjackings, robberies, and the occasional digital murder.

4. UKFDubstep

Subscribers: 5,107,898
Video views: 1,154,729,806

With many agreeing that the origins of dubstep music trace back to South London, it comes as little surprise the UKFDubstep is one the most popular UK YouTube channels around. The channel primarily uploads audio tracks with the occasional dubstep music video, like “I Need You” from Subscape (below).

3. Vsauce

Subscribers: 6,296,127
Video views: 529,173,188

Vsauce takes some very difficult questions and answers them in the simplest possible terms. Ever wonder if guns would work in space? Do you know what color a mirror is? Why are bad words so bad? Vsauce answers these and more in a way that the non-rocket scientists among us can understand.

2. TheSyndicateProject

Subscribers: 6,396,815
Video views: 1,095,976,281

TheSyndicateProject — or just “Syndicate” — is yet another popular UK gaming channel. The channel mainly deals in “Let’s Play” videos from a variety of games, including “Grand Theft Auto V” (I’m sensing a trend here) and “Minecraft.”

1. BlueXephos

Subscribers: 6,454,340
Video views: 2,339,125,573

Originally launching as a “Minecraft”-only channel, BlueXephos (The Yogscast) has since expanded to include indie games, “Minecraft” mods, mini-games, and animated shorts. The channel is extraordinary due to the fact that new videos are uploaded daily if not multiple times a day. To date, the channel has expanded into over 17 Yogscast “Family” channels, featuring individual members of the BlueXephos team.
