The Top Five Emerging Science and Technology Channels on YouTube

/ Dec 8, 2013

Since the beginning of time, man has had a fascination with space and technologies beyond his understanding. I mean, without at least the smallest glimmer of interest in tech, would the ancient Sumerians have invented the wheel? I think not. Flash forward to 2013 and our interest in science and technology still burns as brightly as it did thousands of years ago. It’s why we have world-altering inventions like penicillin, airplanes, rockets, and the very computer that is looking back at you right now.

Science and technology is all about discovery, and what better place for those fields to thrive than on YouTube, a platform built around the idea of finding new and fascinating things?

“Technology and science content today is all about the devices. And, occasionally, really cool space stuff and videos about drones delivering your next handset,” said Chia Chen, SVP/mobile practice lead, North America at DigitasLBi. “But mostly it’s about the devices. People seem to have an insatiable appetite for information about the devices — from the details of packaging to to how long the battery life really is. The winning formula for this type of content has always been: a distinctive and relatable point of view and lots of content around the actual device.”

So who is thriving in the science and tech space on YouTube? Who’s keen eye for gadgets and gizmos is pulling in views faster than a rocket-powered robot racing towards the surface of Mars? Who shall we turn to as the Holidays approach for advice on what to buy even the pickiest of tech heads? In partnership with Outrigger Media and DigitasLBi, with data from Outrigger’s OpenSlate platform (and its Emerging Talent Tracker tool), we’ve got the answer. The test results are in; the top five emerging channels in the technology and science category on YouTube* are:
