Top 5 Emerging Travel Channels on YouTube

/ Nov 9, 2014

If you’re feeling stir crazy at home but unable to leave due to work and, perhaps, shortage of funds, you can feel grateful for YouTube’s travel offerings. From France to Japan and numerous destinations in between, vloggers and documentarians alike have captured great footage from all over the world and uploaded it to YouTube.

Thanks to Outrigger Media’s Emerging Talent Tracker, we’ve compiled a list of the top five developing channels on the video platform that cover the history, people, and landscape of more places than you could imagine visiting this upcoming winter vacation. Let’s start in Western Europe and work our way East…

 5. Des Racines Et Des Ailes

  • SlateScore: 320
  • Total Subs: 3,356
  • Monthly Views: 85,620

This French travel channel offers sweeping, breathtaking views (I know, it sounds corny, but it’s accurate) of the country’s various regions. What sounds like matter-of-fact French dialogue accompanies the scenery, all in all creating the documentary style that pervades this channel.

4. RT Documentary

  • SlateScore: 382
  • Total Subs: 23,679
  • Monthly Views: 1,099,350

Moving further East, this channel focuses on Russia (lucky for English speakers, that’s not the channel’s spoken language). However, RT Documentary does include some Russian language tutorial videos to help potential visitors prepare for their trips, along with various documentaries that showcase both the country’s history and the modern lives that form its current identity.

3. Planet Doc Full Documentaries

  • SlateScore: 447
  • Total Subs: 37,921
  • Monthly Views: 1,442,550

Incredibly high production value and amazing footage marks this adventurers’ YouTube channel. Covering terrain most people would never chance to visit, this long-form documentary destination resembles National Geographic, complete with a focus on history and “remote tribes.”

2. Japan with Regan

  • SlateScore: 449
  • Total Subs: 13,366
  • Monthly Views: 105,540

This channel follows Regan, an English teacher working abroad in Japan. As part of a travel vlog, the videos invite viewers to see Japan through Regan’s eyes, letting them discover novel sites and cultural norms as he does. For example, how do people in the country feel about beards?

1. Steve Booker

  • SlateScore: 537
  • Total Subs: 108,195
  • Monthly Views: 24,052

Steve calls himself a “fashion and lifestyle” YouTube creator, but he certainly gets around…traveling-wise. He journeys with fellow vlogger and friend, Louis, as they take their cameras to foreign streets, catching ground-level footage that gives viewers a true sense of his whereabouts.
