Top Five Emerging Education Channels on YouTube

It’s no secret that YouTube has become a great place for people to learn how to do something — whether that something is strictly academic, or more DIY/tip-oriented. This is largely because with the massive volume of content on YouTube, and the massive number of people who seek out content on YouTube, there is absolutely something for everyone, no matter how difficult or advanced the subject matter.

“The how-to/educational content vertical has exploded in video,” says Jodi Robinson, SVP, account Management, DigitasLBi. “Today’s creators should strive to go as deep as possible on a particular subject, and quickly. The more niche the content, the better. Geek out. Educational video should not follow traditional modes of delivering ‘courseware’ online, where the subjects explored start broad and then go deeper once the foundational pieces are communicated.”

In other words: Don’t paint in broad strokes; you don’t need to. “Don’t use valuable video dollars and viewers’ precious screen time for the really general stuff,” says Robinson. “They can find it elsewhere, or you can link them back to that type of content if they need it.”

And since the choice is even more in the hands of viewers when it comes to online content, engagement becomes even a bigger deal for educational creators. “Engagement within video is the next frontier,” explains Robinson. “Beyond the replay feature, video will increasingly allow viewers to validate their comprehension as they go, and even choose their own adventure in terms of what they learn next, and on what path.”

Where you, as a creator, sit on that path will be determined by the depth of content you create for those who want to learn, and how engaging you can make it.

Here are five emerging education channels on YouTube who are doing exactly that:

5. Slide Nerd

  • SlateScore: 334
  • Total Subs: 10,615
  • Monthly Views: 157,770

If you are someone who has an interest in learning Android or Java programming, this is the channel for you. Measuring 8.4/10 on OpenSlate’s influence scale, Slide Nerd provides all sorts of easy-to-follow tutorials on Android and Java to help beginners get started.

4. Baby League

  • SlateScore: 422
  • Total Subs: 17,552
  • Monthly Views: 108,960

One of the scariest things in the world is being a new parent and raising your child in the first year of his or her life. Most people have no idea what to do, and enlist the help of multiple resources to make sure they’re prepared and doing everything right. Baby League, which scores a whopping 8.7/10 in terms of influence, is one such resource, providing all sort of content from experienced parents (including YouTubers The Nive Nulls) to let the newbies know that they aren’t alone.

3. The Art Assignment

  • SlateScore: 437
  • Total Subs: 61,919
  • Monthly Views: 299,040

Are you surprised that The Art Assignment, a channel and web series launched by VidCon co-founder and author John Green and his wife, Sarah Urist Green, is one of the top emerging channels on YouTube? You shouldn’t be, as the channel not only has some influential people behind it, including PBS Digital Studios (which partnered with the Greens to launch it), but also provides some thoroughly engaging content. Seeking to highlight some talented artists across the US, the channel also encourages viewers to get creative and submit their own art.

2. Teehee Town

  • SlateScore: 471
  • Total Subs: 34,264
  • Monthly Views: 1,794,240

For a long time, most educational content was restricted to the weekday morning and afternoon hours on channels such as Nickelodeon and Disney. With the rise of YouTube, that’s no longer the case, as channels such as Teehee Town also provide an expansive library of educational, but fun, content for youngsters — from nursery rhymes to songs about colors and numbers, Teehee Town has it all.

1. It’s Okay to Be Smart

  • SlateScore: 493
  • Total Subs: 84,423
  • Monthly Views: 673,890

We have to be honest, we appreciate anything that tells people “it’s okay to be smart.” Because guess what? It’s okay to be smart. And host Joe Hanson, of the PBS Digital Studios web series “It’s Okay to Be Smart,” shows you why. If you’re smart, then you have an understanding of how science plugs into everything, and how utterly fascinating, cool, and often-times mindblowing that can be.
