Top Five Emerging Film/Studio Channels on YouTube

/ Apr 27, 2014

It’s always interesting to see if and/or how large traditional media companies are embracing the growing appetite for their content on YouTube. Especially in the film industry, where studios are not only increasing their investments in big-budgeted franchise movies, but are also spending insane amounts to get the public excited for such properties.

“Film and entertainment studios have been typically represented as vehicles for entertainment in theatre, broadcast, or on DVD only,” says Mark Book, VP/director of social content at DigitasLBi. “Now, with the rise of mass franchise sequels and highly anticipated Kickstarter funded programs, audiences want to participate and consume the content before the end product even becomes available in cinema.”

When it comes to studios, this has resulted in the increased use of the web, and specifically YouTube, to launch various content-led campaigns. Because it’s not only about whetting a potential moviegoer’s appetite for your upcoming film, but creating an experience that can expand to a larger percentage of the public.

For brands, this is a place of ripe opportunity, according to Book. “Whether it’s exclusive content, movie trailers, behind-the-scenes videos, sneak peeks, or interactive gaming experiences, brands now have the ability to help mold the story and work with these film companies to strategically deliver video experiences to shared film and brand advocates online and through YouTube,” he says.

And what makes using YouTube even better, adds Book, is that the platform offers a longer shelf-life for traditional film projects, which previously only had a certain amount of time before the public moved on to the next big release. “It’s always important for brands and marketers to keep in mind that although the life of a film or TV show integration has an expiration date, it’ll continue to be discovered and viewed on demand within YouTube.”

What matters, then, is to create engaging content and experiences that can live on on YouTube.

With data from Outrigger Media’s Emerging Talent Tracker tool, in partnership with DigitasLBi, here are the top five emerging film/studio channels on YouTube. As you’ll see, as Book mentioned above, there indeed is a passionate audience for big-budget projects, especially as we kick into the summer movie season.
