Top Five Emerging Food & Cooking Channels on YouTube

/ Jul 27, 2014

People cannot get enough of the foodie trend that’s taken hold of popular culture. In a world where even teenagers have a taste for fine dining because it’s cool, it’s no wonder that YouTube reflects the public bent towards what the digital video space has to offer in terms of, to put it in the words of such videos’ viewers, “food porn.”

From Rosanna Pansino to the guys behind “Epic Meal Time,” YouTube creators have a history of finding creative ways to showcase food in their videos. However, no two food channels are exactly alike on YouTube. As the VP and director of social content at DigitasLBi, Mark Book, notes of the variety of gourmet-leaning content on the platform, “As with most things on YouTube one size doesn’t fit all, so make sure that if you’re going to integrate with a culinary influencer that their style is representative of your brand.”

Book also understands serious potential for the culinary arts to increase their presence on YouTube, along with relevant brands. “At DigitasLBi, we see YouTube as a fertile ground for brands that play in the cooking space,” he says. “The culinary arts remain a growing viewership category on YouTube that hasn’t been owned by marketers like the music, beauty, and entertainment verticals.”

In other words, the realm of food, recipes, and tasty tutorials has as of yet been untapped (or at least under-tapped) by brands and media companies seeking to cut themselves a piece of the (sometimes literal) commercial pie. If the marketers do commence a flurry of knocking at the doors of creators in the foodie realm, here, with data from Outrigger Media, are five of the top emerging channels they’ll want to take a second look at:

  • SlateScore: 462
  • Total Subs: 46,209
  • Monthly Views: 219,990

Also featured on Jamie Oliver’s Food Tube, “DJ BBQ” has a clear passion for meat and outdoor grilling. Appropriate for the sweaty season, the DJ’s recipes involve lots of sauce and inspiration from other barbeque masters.

4. Charli’s Crafty Kitchen

  • SlateScore: 509
  • Total Subs: 60,941
  • Montly Views: 12,265,320

Combining crafts with edibles, Charli’s Crafty Kitchen is run by an eight-year-old (Charli) and her younger sister, Ashlee, who’s only five. Their YouTube channel began when the girls were six and three, but now they run on a professional schedule, posting new videos every Friday. Plus, because these tutorials come from a child, they’re pretty easy to replicate at home.

3. Popsugar Food

  • SlateScore: 527
  • Total Subs: 124,430
  • Monthly Views: 1,559,070

This channel follows the latest, major food trends (such as the [in]famous cronut) and tells you who to recreate them outside of a restaurant’s back of the house. The channel covers savory and sweet professional-level concoctions and delves into the world of wine, too.

2. FastGoodCuisine

  • SlateScore: 562
  • Total Subs: 165,430
  • Monthly Views: 2,177,430

The French-language and extremely innovative channel teaches you how create food items you would never think to “faire” yourself at home. For examples, these home made Twix bars may not look exactly like the real thing, but the guy follows the sweets’ structure and creates a pretty darn good replica.

1. ByronTalbott

  • SlateScore: 580
  • Total Subs: 376,147
  • Monthly Views: 3,328,620

High-quality videos make Talbott’s channel extremely watchable–not to mention the “food porn,” to quote some of the comments this recipe guru has received. The how-to’s this channel provides are straight forward, and the end product always looks tasty.
