Top Five Emerging Travel Channels on YouTube

/ Apr 22, 2014

Spring is finally here. Which means that summer, and the opportunity to get away from the doldrums of work and real life, isn’t that far away.

As you go about planning your next vacation, though, you might find yourself turning to YouTube to learn of the many gorgeous locales you might enjoy spending some time in. As with any other content category, there isn’t a shortage of travel channels you can enlist to help determine your next getaway destination. But which will help you pick the right vacation spot for you?

“Travel content on the web has historically been aspirational,” says Meghan Riley, VP/group director, media, at DigitasLBi. “The goal was to entice you with beautiful scenery, sights, and sounds so that you’d visit a destination. But recently we’ve seen more and more new travel content that is about the untold stories of a beautiful destination, the locals’ POV, or about the emotional connections people can make when they travel outside of their comfort zone.”

It’s easy to flip through magazines and websites and see beautiful images of beaches and waterfalls and make a decision based off that. But if you want to truly have a great vacation experience, then it makes sense to actually learn about the locations you’re hoping to visit. As Riley notes, it’s here where YouTube becomes a great resource.

“Now travel content is not only beautiful, but also highlights the stories that make you think, not just daydreams of a beach,” Riley says.

What’s more, “these new stories create a connection and sense of community among travelers who have had the same experience. More frequently travel content is featuring what travel is really all about — the experience and the stories you tell when you return”

So as your mind drifts to summer and vacation mode, take a look at the following channels, which, as determined by Outrigger Media’s Emerging Talent Tracker, are rising fast in the travel category on YouTube. They very well might have the travel tips, stories, and yes, even the beautiful images, to convince you that a particular spot is the one for you.

5. The Points Guy

Brian Kelly, “The Points Guy,” uses this channel to provide practical travel trips from the comfortable perch of his living room couch (or some equally relaxed seating on the beach, at a hotel, etc., etc.). He answers “readers’ questions” concerning the logistical side of travel, from roundtrip flights to credit card options, providing seriously useful info to anyone with an itch to get up and go.

4. Carly Friesen

  • SlateScore: 229
  • Total Subs: 1,060
  • Monthly Views: 32,760

24-year-old Canadian Carly Friesen vlogs and teaches the Dutch language in addition to covering travel on her channel. Firsthand footage of the countries she visits (accompanied by appropriate music) interspersed with her vlogging narrative outlines her adventures, marking the important stops for viewers to experience as if for themselves. You’ll feel like a part of Friesen’s family by the end of her travel clips.

3. Hopscotch the Globe

  • Monthly Views: 153,837

Hosted by “self-proclaimed travel junkie” Kristen Sarah, this travel channel covers her trips from all over the globe. An adventurous traveler, this spunky host zip lines, hang glides, and provides plain, ole’ travel tips in pure vlogging style for your viewing pleasure. Also a place to showcase her acting, the channel provides comedic, travel-related skits, as well.

2. Travel Hacking TV

  • SlateScore: 376
  • Total Subs: 8,640

This Russian channel follows traveler Ivan as he makes his way all over the world. Whether you understand a word of Russian or not, the footage should be comprehensive and real enough to keep you intrigued. If you’re interested in simply walking the streets of foreign cities and towns (without bothering with the tourist-aimed fanfare), this is the channel for you.

1. Emirates

  • SlateScore: 571
  • Total Subs: 29,306
  • Monthly Views: 4,775,490

Flying to over 140 destinations with “one of the most modern fleets in the sky,” it only makes sense that Emirates airline has its own, official travel channel on YouTube. Dramatic, birds-eye angles mix with majestic, ground-level views to ultimately showcase Emirates’ planes’ luxury accommodations. From Glasgow to Dubai, Emirates will take you there in comfort and style (or at least, this seems to be the channel’s main message).
