Troye Sivan on His Most Popular YouTube Video

/ Apr 18, 2014

Though there are a number of gay vloggers on YouTube, not many of them can say that their most viewed video captures them coming out their audiences. With over two million views, Troye Sivan’s coming out video counts as his top hit, so he told Rhett & Link out how it got there on “Ear Biscuits.”

When you’re a vlogger, your most important asset becomes your authenticity and how that connects you with your audience. “People vlogging to be somebody they’re not isn’t going to work,” Link noted, and Sivan agreed. In fact, he told the guys that his favorite Grace Helbig videos are the ones where she’s in bed, sick or hungover, because it makes her appear more human.

Though an actor (who’s appeared in feature films like “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”), Sivan told Rhett & Link, “I never act for my YouTube videos.” As he sees it, “authenticity needs to be there because eventually, you’re going to get called out if it’s not.” Hence, Sivan felt some responsibility to come out to his YouTube audience. As a vlogger, Sivan experienced a real connection with his fans, even though they consisted of a large group of people he’d never met before.

Besides those factors, Sivan had turned to the internet himself when he was thinking about coming out to his friends and family. “It was the only thing I knew how to do,” he said of Googling his sexuality, which is how he first landed on Tyler Oakley, a current, close collaborator. Since the internet had been so helpful to Sivan during his initial coming out, he figured he could provide the same help he got there to others.

“I was speaking to this audience more often that I was speaking to people who went to my school,” Sivan further explained his need to be open and honest on YouTube. “I was legitimately having a conversation and relationship with this large group of people and it got to the point where it felt like I couldn’t say certain things,” like the name of his celebrity crush, for example.

Sivan has no regrets about his coming out video. He wouldn’t change it if he could, but he’s happy that he got a chance to build the relationship he had with his audience prior to coming out. Part of Sivan’s vlogging authenticity comes from being a complex person, and he didn’t want to become popular off of a single aspect of his being.

If you want to hear Sivan reveal even more about his true self, tune into his in-depth interview with Rhett & Link on “Ear Biscuits.”
