Fifty Shades of Grey 2-13-15

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, which means that YouTube is abuzz with romantic content. From beauty tutorials to help prepare for dates to videos that poke fun at the Hallmark holiday, Valentine’s Day content on the video platform has, in total, garnered over 2.6 billion views across over 19,000 channels, according to data from Pixability.

Makeup tutorials make up a large chunk of these V-Day videos, accounting for about 200 million views. At top of these YouTube tutorials, with over 6 million views, is the 2010 video “Valentine’s Night” by LaCindina. Here’s how as many as 6 million people are doing their makeup on Valentine’s eve:

The only video category beating makeup this holiday is “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the book cum movie that’s set to premiere on February 14. Of the total V-Day views on YouTube, 292 million plus come from “Fifty Shades” content.

This content spans official trailers, movie reviews, spoofs, soundtracks…and Ellen Degeners. You’ve likely already seen the most watched “Fifty Shades” trailer (the first official trailer that was released on YouTube now has over 54 million views). However, the one starring Elle Degeneres in the leading role is undoubtedly better.

Arugably, this Funny or Die video starring Nick Kroll and Selena Gomez is yet an even better spoof. You can watch it here.

As for “Fifty Shades”-related music videos, Ellie Goulding’s official “Love Me Like You Do” video (which intersperses scenes from the trailer) got the most views, at over 42 million.

To sum it up, “Fifty Shades of Grey” overshadowed most brand’s tentpole content in time for February 14. We’ll see if the hype sticks around after the movie comes out.
