Vlogbrothers’ John Green Talks Duos with Rhett & Link

/ Jul 5, 2014

With the success of John Green’s “The Fault in Our Stars,” book and movie, one would imagine an imbalance building between the Vlogbrothers. When Rhett & Link asked John about this during the recent “Ear Biscuits,” he said it was something he and brother Hank had certainly discussed.

The short answer to the question of whether an imbalance has budded, from John, was, “It hasn’t.” He explained, “Hank doesn’t care about material success at all, but [an imbalance has been created] in the sense that all these people are watching our videos that don’t identify with nerdfighteria [the name for the brothers’ fan base] as much as we’re used to.” This means that less people are equally interested in both of their work, which is something the brothers are trying to work around by keeping the focus on nerdfighters in spite of “The Fault in Our Stars” success.

As John acknowledged to Rhett & Link, a creative duo themselves, collaborations can “get weird at some point,” further noting that his and Hank’s luckily has yet to do so. In fact, the brothers spend plenty of time discussing what to think about the new influx of fans from “The Fault in Our Stars,” ultimately focusing on the positives of the situation. They decided that some would become nerdfighters themselves after exposure to the Green brothers’ content, while others would take different interests and values from watching the Vlogbrothers. New people shouldn’t result in longtime followers leaving the community, in John’s view.

As for the balance of labor between the Greens, John expressed zero concerns. “I’m conscious of what I’m contributing. I’m also extremely conscious of what Hank’s contributing,” he said, and he never worries about whether or not Hank is pulling his weight because Hank “works harder than anyone” in John’s opinion.

Like in all partnerships, the brothers “contribute very different things.” John explained, “That’s a lot of the strength of [our collaboration], is me knowing what’s mine and him knowing what’s his.” Figuring out specializations within a team is key, as is learning to trust one another’s determined expertise. Rhett & Link certainly understood when John said, “That’s Hank’s thing, so he’s probably right.”

The thing that ultimately keeps the Vlogbrothers working well together is their shared purpose. It’s “one thing [they] never argue about.” Both of the brothers have the noble desire to work for the good of others, harboring charitable inclinations and eschewing materialistic viewpoints. As long as a duo can maintain the same ultimate goals, they should be able to work out other kinks in the relationship.
