How to Repurpose Your Content: ‘Magnet Minute’ (Video)

/ Mar 1, 2014

This week on the “Magnet Minute,” Amy helps you come up with ideas on how to repurpose your old content, making something old into something new.

Your first option is to look at your content calendar used during the previous year to see if there were any trends or particular subjects that catch your eye a second time around. You’ll likely see something on there that has changed and/or developed throughout the year, creating a perfect opportunity to follow up. Or maybe it’s you who’s changed! Perhaps your ideas and opinions on the topics changed and you’d like to discuss that evolution in a new post or piece of content. Create your update, linking back to your previous posts to add some stickiness to your website.

People love list posts. They’re easy to skim through and easily drawing people in. For example, last week on the “Magnet Minute,” we shared our most popular “Magnet Minute” episodes of 2013, which allowed us to repurpose older videos and get them in front of people who may not have seen them before. There was a lot of back-linking to be done there and on top of that, it gives the opportunity for newer friends and followers to feel “caught up” on what you’re doing and what you’ve been up to previously. Think about even more ways to find trends throughout your published content so you can link back and point out some of the more valuable information you’ve shared in the past year or so.

Using quotes can provide a really great way to feature content that you’ve made previously. If you’ve ever interviewed someone or even if you find a great quote from a contributor (or from yourself!), re-feature that quote and link back to its original content source. Plus, prominently featuring a good quote makes a piece more attractive for those who may share your content.

It’s important to consider not only repurposing on your blog, but also through your social media channels. Many are sharing and discovering on social media, so when you’re going through your older content, keep in mind that people on these networks often gravitate toward visually-appealing, snappy, bite-size pieces of information.

Another way to organize and package older content is to use a platform like Slideshare, which is great place through which to share bite-sized content. You may think Slideshare lends itself better to longer form content, because many use it to post lengthy presentations, but it’s is also a great outlet for turning one-sentence concepts into 15 easily-consumable and very shareable slides. Consider how you can take tidbits of information, expand on them a bit with some beautiful, visual slides, and take advantage of the Slideshare network.

One other thing that’s become incredibly popular in recent year, is to repurpose blog content in book form. Many marketing books (or books on other topics too) are a accumulation of blog posts over time, repackaged into a long-form piece of content. So don’t only think about how you can size back your content into bite-sized bits, but also think about how you can expand on it to create an impressive and larger piece of content that may elevate your brand and increase perception of you as a thought leader.
