Web Series Wednesday: Embark on an Outta-This-World Journey

/ Oct 1, 2014

This Web Series Wednesday provides you with an ecclectic mix of truly odd content. Watch Snoop Lion take on his latest alter ego, Nemo Hoes, as a “news” anchor, or embark on a couple supernatural adventures, whether with an animated group of teen space warriors or with a classroom full of girls with magic powers (all played by adult men).

Whatever journey you choose to take with this week’s web series picks, it should prove an entertaining one. Find yourself on any other video adventures on the web? Let us know at [email protected].

Paragon School for Girls

The animation and design of this series is at once extremely bizarre and intriguing, as is the fact that it focuses on a group of “girls” played exclusively by adult male actors. The set may or may not be a doll’s house, and the premise will baffle you from the start, but it might intrigue you with its enduring mystery. If not, it’s worth watching simply because it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. When I call this show truly unique, I’m not exaggerating. Also, say what you will, but the acting isn’t half bad. Created by Jim Hansen, this show is available on The Orphans YouTube channel.

Bravest Warriors

If you haven’t seen this Cartoon Hangover staple, especially if you’re a fan of Cartoon Network’s “Adventure Time,” it’s time you start watching “Bravest Warriors.” It’s been around for a while, but the third season was just announced over the summer, so there’s more to look forward to if you’re into colorful and, let’s admit it, extremely cute animation and colloquialisms like “big ups” and “for realsies.” The show manages to get away with being sinister by hiding beneath an animated, upbeat exterior, making it all the more enticing.

Hello Cupid

Tackling several important issues in the world of online dating by the end of episode one (how much does the picture count for, anyway?), this web series employs a classic plotline—the sexy, wild friend and her more conservative counterpart team up to take on the dating world (think “The Truth About Cats & Dogs”). “Hello Cupid” uses this trope in an even smarter way by asking what role skin tone has to play in this otherwise semi-tired dynamic–and the dynamic is only “semi-tired,” after all, because it still reels you in, no matter how many creators have used it.

Kam Kardasian

Starring the “long-lost” gay Kardasian sister (whom the family disowned way back when), this series successfully makes fun of reality TV/celebrity culture by showcasing who wouldn’t get famous through its influence. Sparing nothing Kardasian, including each family’s hairstyle and Kim’s marriages, each vignette takes a sharp (but not overly mean-spirited) jab at the family that got famous for…? Every guest appearance adds a surprising comedic twist, like a therapist who’s convinced that Kam is actually her only male sibling, Rob, and a first date who brings along a prenup.

Snoop Lion proves that he can successfully add “news anchor” to his lengthy repertoire in “GGN.” Always chill and down to earth, the former Dogg has seemingly real conversations with an array of celebrities ranging from Paris Hilton to the famous “fuck it, I quit” Alaskan ex-news anchor, Charlo Greene (and let’s not discount Seth Rogen and 50 Cent). The weekly YouTube “news” show on WestFestTV (hey, it’s news that Paris Hilton drank her first 40, right?) also just passed the famous 1 million subscriber mark, making it officially very popular.
