Web Series Wednesday: Five Worth Watching

/ Aug 13, 2014

After getting numerous tips about intriguing web series, we figured we’d start compiling weekly lists of the most noteworthy. Thus, expect a post every Wednesday featuring five digital series that we think are pretty cool — excelling in terms of storytelling, acting, editing, and, of course, content. Here are some of the latest series that have been sent our way, so you can see what content the internet has in store without having to search for it.

Classic Alice

Born of a strong concept, “Classic Alice” follows a self-proclaimed nerd of a college English major, Alice, as she seeks to recover from a “failing” grade (which is a B-, in her book) on an English test in a — to say the least — highly creative manner. The concept? Alice will read classic novels and perform the characters’ actions in the books. Unfortunately for Alice, she starts off with Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment.” The fresh idea and solid editing meet slightly hokey acting in this YouTube-based series that’s definitely worth a look, especially if you’re into literature.

Seeking Sublet

Challenging you to have a more annoying roommate, “Seeking Sublet” takes place in well-furnished apartments, where disgruntled cohabitants tell their darkest roomie tales. From the “BFF who can’t pay rent” to the (presumably very rare) roommate without a phone, this Funny or Die show proves relatable if you’re of the certain age when sharing apartments makes the most financial sense. Above all, “Seeking Sublet” will make you laugh. You can watch trailer here.

Freak Me

It’s too bad that this show is still only in pilot form, because it looks hilarious. With very high quality production, “Freak Me” resembles “The Office” in both format and intriguing characters with realistic and exaggerated quirks alike. Directed by Neil Fennell, the series follows the activities of those working on a “dating” app that’s really more of an escort/webcam/fetish service. It looks made for TV, but the raunchy content renders it perhaps more appropriate for the web.

Just posted on YouTube, this sketch comedy series follows roommates (obviously), Stu and Syd, as they embark on a variety of typical young-adult best friend antics. From juice cleanses to eradicating apartment pests, Stu and Syd overcome obstacles with lots of style in about three minutes or less. Colorful frames serve as the cherry on top of the comedic pair’s simple but extremely tight bond.

I Hate Being Single

Though it’s been around for some time on the internet, this Williamsburg-based, hipster-focused show is less ironic and more straight-up funny than its subject matter would suggest. Longer episodes allow for more of a narrative and you get to journey with the show’s main character, Rob, from the breakup that gets the series going. Rob Kugel created the show and also vlogs on his YouTube channel. The second season of “I Hate Being Single” comes out this year.

Check back every Wednesday for more of our top picks, and of course, let us know what you think. To pitch us on web series that we absolutely have to watch, contact the VideoInk editorial team at [email protected]
