What You Missed at the September Big Screen Little Screen LA Meetup

/ Sep 25, 2013

Big Screen Little Screen LA took the SAG-AFTRA National Headquarters by storm last night showcasing more than a few incredible early-stage and completed web projects. Hosted by Paul Kontonis, this round of Big Screen Little Screen LA was chalk full of clones, coffee shop slackers, and a very serious pair of bounty hunters.

Here’s the rundown for those who missed it:

“Your Server Is Not Out to Get You…?”

Presenter: Julian Diaz

Traversing the tricky ground that is being a server in Los Angeles, this web series visited the worst parts of working in a restaurant. “Your Server Is Not Out to Get You…?” was a last minute addition to the BSLS lineup. However, the series currently has three full episodes up at the website Yourserverseries.com.

“Life with Kat & McKay”

Presenter: Sandra Payne

Payne presented episode one of the second season of “Life with Kat & McKay,” a web series from YouTube channel PurseDogTV. Payne is the creator of the romantic comedy series, which currently has 21 episodes up on YouTube.

Payne explained that the series, which follows a young couple in the early stages of dating, has been in the works since 2009.

“Practice Space”

Presenter: Nick Blake

Blake presented the pilot episode for his docu-web series “Practice Space,” which examined indie band Lemolo as they practiced the song “Knives.” The series, as Blake explained, was created to show bands in an intimate setting outside of major performances.

Blake added that he would keep the series “totally indie,” even going as far as to say that traditional television was “broken” and that his YouTube channel would be called VT — a play on the reverse of TV. “Practice Space” was produced by Apartment 18 Productions.

“Coffee Shop Squatters”

Presenters: Eddie Beasley and Ashleigh Nichols

Beasley and Nichols presented their comedy series with the preface that it featured something all LA-natives were familiar with. “Coffee Shop Squatters” is a series about two screenwriters who have more or less moved their office into a local coffee shop. In the clip show, our main protagonists argue over the title of a screenplay before meeting with their boorish agent.

The series also starred Laura Spencer from “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” as the coffee shop’s owner.

“Reena Clone Blog”

Presenter: Reena Tolentino

Reena Clone Blog” is fairly self-explanatory. With too much on her plate, Reena creates several cloned versions of herself. One for cooking, one for cleaning and so on. The series, which played out at as a pseudo-vlog was done in single shot format with Tolentino talking directly to the audience.

Tolentino explained that she wanted more opportunities to practice her range as an aspiring actress. She also mentioned that “Reena Clone Blog” has since landed her several acting gigs in Los Angeles.

“Kickin It Caucasian”

Presenter: Jason Bevly

More of a vlog than a series, Bevly explained that he would like to pitch his comedy series to networks like Comedy Central or FX. “Kickin It Caucasian” followed Bevly as he embarked on, what he deemed, fundamentally “white person” activities such as skydiving and visiting the Renaissance Faire.

Bevly expressed his hopes that his show would take people out of their comfort zones in terms of how they approach racial stereotypes and expectations.

“Black and White”

Presenter: Gregory Storm

Black and White” was a short digital episode that followed two freelance bounty hunters as they negotiated a hostage tradeoff. The series was a NYTVF selection in 2012 and starred “Numbers” actor Alimi Ballard.

Storm, who co-wrote and directed “Black and White” expressed that the series was created in part so he could try his hand at being “behind the camera.” The series was produced by Storm’s production company Storm Factory.
