YouTube’s Freddie Wong Talks About Timing, Vlogging, and Filling the Gamer’s Void

/ Feb 10, 2014

Freddie Wong doled out plenty of YouTube wisdom during his chat on “Ear Biscuits with Rhett & Link.” From good fatherly advice to taking advantage of personal interests, Wong certainly has some advice worth listening to if you’re aiming for success on YouTube.

1. Timing is everything.

Recognizing that America’s “chief export” is cultural product these days, Wong’s rather traditional Chinese father contributed to Wong’s understanding of timing in this industry. Though Wong laments what may have happened had YouTube existed while he was making videos in high school, he recognizes that he learned film just in time to capitalize on his skills in the YouTube universe.

2. Fill the void and think outside the ‘Tube.

When Wong started out on YouTube, the talk centered on a majority female audience, which he balked at. “Our demographics are like 90/10 male to female,” he said of his largely game-themed videos. Wong got a lot of attention from gaming blogs early on, platforms that tend to “hurt for content.” Since video-game news was sparse, Wong provided content where content was missing, thus generating much of his early traffic from outside of YouTube.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

When Wong met YouTuber DeStorm and learned that he made his living as a YouTube partner, Wong dived right in with the questions. Discovering how many videos, views, and what kind of content got DeStorm noticed led to Wong trying out the same route…which landed him with, more or less, the same job.

4. “Go crazy.”

After his talk with DeStorm, Wong noted, “If you look at the time stamps on the videos from that period, we were just going crazy.” If a popular trailer came out, Wong and his collaborators would green screen him in and make a spoof of it. A common technique for rising YouTube stars, hitching on to popular content tends to make you popular, too.
