If you were on Twitter Monday night, you might have noticed that AwesomenessTV’s self-titled TV show premiered on Nickelodeon at 8pm ET/PT. The kids/teen MCN was in full force to get its audience to watch the sketch comedy program, which is hosted by Daniella Monet (“Victorious”). I believe it even trended on Twitter.
That said, we are not yet at a point where Twitter is any sort of currency for TV advertisers. That mantle still belongs to Nielsen, which reports that “AwesomenessTV” averaged close to 1.73 million viewers on Monday night. That is all people ages 2 and above tuning in to watch live and on the same day. In terms of live viewership, the 8pm telecast averaged 1.498 million viewers.
When broken down by demos, “AwesomenessTV” averaged a 2.6 rating among kids ages 2-11 and a 2.9 rating among kids ages 9-14 (both are live + same day). This translates to 1.046 million viewers among kids 2-11 and 681,000 viewers among kids 9-14.
In terms of the live audience, the show scored a 2.3 rating among the 2-11 demo and a 2.4 rating among the 9-14 demo, according to numbers provided by Nielsen. This translates to an average of 921,000 kids ages 2-11 and 580,000 kids ages 9 to 14 watching the show live.
So what does all of this mean?
“AwesomenessTV” will most often be compared to “The Annoying Orange,” another web-to-TV property (this from Collective Digital Studio), which debuted on the Cartoon Network last year to strong ratings among kids 2-11, 6-11, and 9-14. In fact, “Annoying Orange” continues to kill in its time slot among boys 6-11 and 9-14.
But let’s take a different tack. The top cable show among kids 2-11 for the week of June 17-23 was a tie: The 9pm Sunday night telecast of Disney Channel’s “Shake It Up” and the 6pm Thursday night telecast of Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants” each drew 1.849 million viewers from that demo (scroll down). If that’s the bar, “AwesomenessTV” is already more than halfway there.
And keep in mind, AwesomenessTV had less than two weeks to market the show before its premiere. And these numbers do not take into account rerun or time-shifted viewing (which we should have more information on next week). If a TV-length web series debuted on the AwesomenessTV channel to similar numbers, it would be considered a successful launch. I’m going to say the same thing for the TV show. It’ll be interesting to see if “AwesomenessTV can keep it up.
