STUDY: Viewership of Netflix Originals Rises

/ Nov 28, 2014

Netflix’s original content has garnered a lot of talk, gaining recognition from the Emmys as well as other big players in the TV industry who are either echoing or taking issue with the company’s approach. However, it’s hard to say what these shows’ viewership looks like, since Netflix isn’t that forthcoming with the figures. So how are the streaming service’s original series really doing when it comes to who’s watching?

According to a recent survey from Centris (yes, it’s a survey, not an exact measurement), which asked Netflix subscribers about their viewing habits of the service’s original since since the first quarter of 2014, more subscribers are tuning into this content than they did at the start of the year.

In Q1 of 2014, 57% of Netflix subscribers watched an original series on the service, reported the survey. By the third quarter of this year, 72% of the service’s users had seen episodes of shows like “Orange Is the New Black,” “The Killing,” or, hey, maybe even “BoJack Horseman.”

Centris Netflix Original Viewing Graph 2014

Millennials, of course, tend to be more in the know about new shows on the streaming service, but even older viewers have been watching more Netflix originals than they were at the beginning of the year. While the percentage of 18 to 34-year-old viewers watching original series jumped from 15% in the first quarter to the third this year (from 61% to 76%), Centris found the same increase with viewers aged 35 to 44 (going from 56% in Q1 to 71% in Q3).

Centris Netflix Originals Viewing by Age 2014

This study, “Centris Evolution of Video Tracking Study in Q1 and Q3 2014,” focused on US Netflix subscribers and surveyed 1,282 people in Q1 and 2,080 people in Q3, with data weighted based on the number of households with internet in the country.

It’s very much worth noting, again, that the data comes from a survey, so all answers were self-reported and not based on actual online view counts. In other words, take the figures with a grain or two of salt…but walk away with the knowledge that Netflix originals are likely getting more popular.
