ABC News Brings 24/7 News Video to Apple TV
Today, ABC News comes to Apple TV with a video app that will provide constant news and regular live updates on the streaming platform. The app supplements live streaming video with constant on-demand access to ABC’s lineup along with global updates and local content through ABC television stations around the US.
Featured video segments will come from shows like “Good Morning America,” “World News with Diane Sawyer,” “Nightline,” “20/20,” and “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” all available 24/7. The video app also provides users with hourly video updates, as well as four to five daily clips in real time of reporters stationed from Brazil to Ukraine, covering headlines as news-worthy events take place worldwide.
ABC’s nine television stations will also show their top content through the app, giving users news content that pertains to their corner of the US. For now, the Apple TV app covers stories from WABC in New York, WPVI in Philadelphia, WLS in Chicago, KABC in Los Angeles, and several other stations in other pockets of the country.
The app also curates its best content, featuring entertainment news and original ABC programming that shuffles its order depending on what’s deemed the top story or video as the day goes on. Meanwhile, the news archives at ABC lets users travel back up to 50 years in the past for footage, some of which is also curated into week- or daylong historical collages, like “This Week in History” or “The Day in Pictures.”
The new video app reflects the trend of news delivery conforming to people’s busy schedules instead of the other way around. The constant availability and frequent updates all on viewers’ mobile phones and connected TVs of their choosing clearly caters to an audience that’s on the move and very busy.
“Our goal is to put our users in control of their news,” Joe Ruffalo, senior vice president of ABC News Digital, explained, “[by] utilizing hours of live video each day, opening up our archives, extending our strong local brands, and bringing the trust of ABC News to our users when and where they want it.”
Ruffalo continued, “We’re very focused on what’s next.” ABC displayed this back in 2012, when they launched their reimagined news app for the iPad, which learned the viewing patterns of those taking in their news on the web and mirrored them accordingly.Tags: 20/20, ABC News, apple tv, Good Morning America, live streaming video, News, Nightline, video app, VOD
