Al Jazeera Prepping a New YouTube News Channel Called ‘AJ+’
International news network Al Jazeera is launching a new YouTube channel to produce news videos and related content for online audiences.
Announced at MIPCOM in Cannes, the upcoming channel is currently being referred to as Al Jazeera Plus (or AJ+), and will debut in “the next few months.”
The central tenet of the channel appears to be producing and distributing content in a way that aligns with how people are watching and interacting with video online. In a statement, Al Jazeera’s innovation and incubation manager Moeed Ahmad said: “There is a generation of people who wants to go beyond the box. They instinctively turn online to consume news. They share, like, tweet, comment, interact, and forward. To reach them requires a fresh approach.”
Ask any YouTube content creator for tips on how to be successful on the site, and one of the first things they’ll say is to create stuff that sparks a conversation — that engages the viewer, which is likely the “fresh approach” Ahmad is referring to.
Per a job posting uncovered by GigaOm, it looks like AJ+ will — unsurprisingly — produce short-form news reports, in addition to other formats like short documentaries and “discussion programs.”
AJ+ will be based in San Francisco, with global offices in Beijing, Johannesburg, New Delhi, and other places.Tags: Al Jazeera, News Video, NowThis News, youtube
